M. LaRaine McGrath, of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late Martin F. McGrath, Jr., passed away on August 5th 2025. LaRaine was born August 17, 1940 in Endicott, New York, and was the daughter of Rudolph and Mary (Germ) Thuma. A graduate of the Union-Endicott High School and St. Lawrence University, where she majored Mathematics and met her future husband, Marty. After University, LaRaine spend a year studying at the University of Edinburgh before beginning her carrier at IBM as a systems analyst. She was one of only a handful of women who worked in such a technical capacity at IBM at that time. LaRaine lived for a brief period with Marty in Shaker Heights Ohio before they moved to West Hartford CT. After retiring from IBM, LaRaine continued her professional engagement for many more years as a senior tax preparer at H&R Block. LaRaine was a long-time member of the Junior League and an active member of the Friendship Force. She and her husband enjoyed many exciting trips, both domestically and abroad. At home, LaRaine loved shopping for bargains, puttering around the garden (particularly enjoying the flowers and tomatoes) and spending time with her family. LaRaine was predeceased by her husband Martin F. McGrath, Jr. and her brother Thomas John (TJ) Thuma of Greenville, North Carolina. She is survived by her son, Martin F. McGrath, IV and his wife Jennifer, and their sons Martin and Britton, of Trumbull; her brother, William (Bil) Thuma, of Toronto, Canada and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved. She will be missed by sister-in-law's, Sally Hopko Thuma and Kathy Thuma, Bil's partner Jane DuBroy, and dear friend Rae Patria formerly of Hong Kong.
