Mabel G. (Knudson) Hogdahl, 101, longtime resident of Lakeside Township, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 29, 2025, at Diamond Willow - Lester Park Assisted Living in Duluth, MN. She was born in Duluth on September 3, 1923, to George and Anna (Hanson) Knudson.
Mabel was raised on a farm in South Range, WI along with older siblings Victoria and Albert. She attended the one-room Ibsen School through the ninth grade before leaving home at age 16 to board in Superior while attending Central High School. She graduated from Central in the class of 1941.
After her schooling, Mabel relocated to Chicago and roomed with her sister, Victoria and future sister-in-law, Edith. She spent the war years working in various jobs. Her favorite jobs were working as a teller in a bank and as a key punch operator for the railroad.
Mabel met her future husband, Gideon Hogdahl, when he visited his sister Edith when in Chicago on leave from the Navy. Mabel and Gideon were married in Chicago on January 17, 1948, and moved back up north to the Hogdahl family farm in Lakeside Township. There they raised their three children and celebrated 57 years together before Gideon's passing in 2005.
Mabel and Gid worked and played as a team throughout their marriage. They were always fishing together on their boat out of Cornucopia, WI for lake trout and coho. After retirement, Gid and Mabel tended to three very productive vegetable gardens which provided them and their friends, family, and neighbors with produce. Together as a team, they would put up dozens of jars of vegetables.
Gid and Mabel loved to travel, ranging up to Canada and over to Michigan just to pick blueberries. They treasured their time in Florida each winter visiting their siblings. Mabel was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and aunt who will be forever loved and missed.
Mabel is survived by her children John Hogdahl, Superior, WI, Eileen (Rick) Sugars, Lakewood Township, MN, and Jill (Toby) Ellsworth, North St Paul, MN; granddaughter Jennifer (Bryan) Van Den Bosch, Minneapolis, MN; nieces Margie (Warren) Smith, Carol (Larry) Taipale, Lois Pitzele; nephews Tom Knudson, Phill (Ami) Knudson, Don (Candy) Knudson, and Carl Knudson.
Mabel is preceded in death by her husband, Gideon; her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Albert (June) Knudson; and sister and brother-in-law, Victoria (Francis) Payne.
A Memorial Service will be held at a future date.
