It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mae Elvera Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of our community. Born on November 23, 1923, in Houma, Louisiana, Mae lived a remarkable life that was characterized by her unwavering faith and profound dedication to her family. She departed this world peacefully on June 25, 2025, at the age of 101 ½ years young.

Mae was a young 17-year-old woman when she met and married the love of her life Joseph W. Smith on August 5, 1941. While Joseph served in the South Pacific during World War II, Mae waited for his return home. When the war ended and Joseph returned home they began their family. In 1967, she tragically lost her husband Joseph in a car accident. During this time of tragedy is when she found her calling from God. She began working for the First United Methodist church as a nursery worker and later became the custodial housekeeper and faithfully devoted 37 years serving her church and community, where her gentle spirit and nurturing nature touched the lives of many. She proudly retired at the age of 92, having built a legacy of love and service that will never be forgotten.

Her greatest treasure was her family. Mae is survived by her loving daughters, Gerri Huffman and Stella Guidry; her grandchildren, Lisa Quinn, Lori Bynog, Dawn Allison, Shawn Guidry and Tara Guidry; great-grandchildren, David Gros, Jesha Ames, Tiffany Gave, Justin Timmons, Tabitha Timmons, Kyle Allison, Imani Guidry and Jordan Guidry; great-great grandchildren, Tyler Gros, Trevor Gros, Sonny Ames, Declan Ames, Scarlett Ames, Peyton Gave and Everett Gave;  her sister Rose Christen; and numerous nieces and nephews

Mae is reunited in Heaven with her parents Luke Duthu and Rosemary Fazzio Duthu; the love of her life Joseph Wallace Smith Jr.; and her siblings, Joseph Duthu, Houston Duthu, Raymond Duthu, Rita Duthu Dion, Nora Duthu Fitch, Emile Duthu, Myron Duthu, Libby Duthu Brunet and Claude Duthu.

A visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 9 AM till time of services at 11 AM. Interment will follow immediately after the service at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. We welcome all who knew and loved Mae to join us in celebrating her life and honoring her memory.

The family would like to thank The Oaks of Pineville, LA for their loving care of Mae the past five years.
