Mahalia "Katie" Novak, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, in Indianapolis. Born on March 25, 1948, in Whitesburg, Kentucky to John Novak and Inez Adams, Katie was the embodiment of love and resilience throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by her cherished parents and siblings: brothers Thomas and Donald Novak and sister Patsy Coffman. The loss of her son Samual Edwards Brewer—affectionately known as Uncle Fred—left an indelible mark on her heart that she carried with grace until the end.

Katie's legacy lives on through her devoted children: Mary Ellen Wilhelm “Sam”and Donna Lynn Settles “Sonny” AKA “Katfish”. She took immense pride in being a grandmother to Justin Paul Wilhelm (“Jamie”), Christopher Michael Wilhelm, Kayla Lynn Settles, Paula Kay Kelshaw (Brandon), Ella Inez Settles; as well as a great-grandmother to Hayden Michael Wilhelm; Grace Ann Marie Aruther; Christopher Allen Peacock (“CJ”); James Dean Peacock; Kassidy Faith Wilhelm; Riviera Nikole Kelshaw; Bry’lee Dawn Settles; Jordan Sonny Settles; Sawyer Brewer; and Evangeline Brewer. Each grandchild held a special place in Katie’s heart, a testament to the deep bonds she nurtured within her family.

In addition, to the human family members who adored her unconditionally were Katie's loving fur babies. Her home was filled with joy thanks to Black Betty, Charlye Wilhelm, Cheeks Riviera, Rizzi Rose and Rage Settles—all of whom brought laughter into her days. She also mourned the passing of several furry companions over the years including Peanut and Max Wilhelm, Bray Settles, along with Thrax & Lola Kelshaw.

Katie was an incredibly special person with a heart full of love. Her ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued created lasting memories for those who were fortunate enough to know her. She enjoyed bringing people together for fun and laughter. She loved taking everyone’s money in "Left, Right, and Center" and the casino. Her presence will surely leave a big hole in the lives of those around her.

Her spirit will forever remain alive. As we gather during this time of sorrowful reflection—we celebrate a woman whose kindness touched countless lives—a true matriarch whose legacy will continue for generations yet unborn.

Though our hearts ache from losing such an irreplaceable soul—we find solace knowing that Nana now rests peacefully among those she has loved dearly before us.
