Mahlon M. Weaver Jr., age 85, of Montezuma, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on May 26, 2025. He lived a full and faithful life of 85 years, 8 months, and 13 days. Born on September 13, 1939, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Mahlon was the son of Mahlon M. Weaver Sr. and Sarah Kramer Weaver. From humble beginnings, he grew into a man of quiet strength, humor, and deep conviction.
On June 14, 1961, Mahlon married Vernie E. Yoder in Montezuma, Georgia. Their story was one for the books—beginning with a mix-up when Mahlon's friends accidentally asked out the wrong girl on his behalf. Though Mahlon initially said he’d “never marry that girl” when he discovered it was Vernie, Vernie figured she’d go anyway—and what a decision that turned out to be. Their double wedding was stapled together in more ways than one, and they went on to share 63 wonderful years of marriage, just a few days shy of 64. As it turned out, a simple youngster's mistake led to a lifetime of love.
Mahlon was baptized as a young boy, but in his own words, spent time wondering if he truly knew the Lord. In October 2019, following a life-threatening incident, he experienced a spiritual awakening that reignited his faith. From that moment on, Mahlon served God with renewed passion and unwavering dedication. He and Vernie were active members of Gospel Light Mennonite Church, where they found fellowship.
A lover of the outdoors, Mahlon found joy and solace in God’s creation. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending countless hours with his children in the woods and by the water. This past hunting season, he was still out in the woods, sharing special memories with his children—including the moment when he shot what would be his last deer, a moment that held deep meaning for his family, even if it meant one less deer for them to shoot. His children remember fondly the times at Marvin’s pond and the water hole—especially the legendary moment when Mahlon had to shoot a moccasin snake coming across the pond toward them. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the faith he stood on, and the stories they will tell for generations. He will be deeply missed by his wife Vernie, his children and grandchildren, his church family, all customers of Five Points which he owned and operated from 1974 to 2018, and all who had the blessing of knowing him.
Survivors include his devoted wife Vernie Yoder Weaver of Montezuma; Eight children, Reuben Dale Weaver of Montezuma, Viola Weaver Hershberger (Steven Hershberger) of Montezuma, Jacob Ray Weaver of Montezuma, Melvin Eli Weaver of Oglethorpe, Marvin Paul Weaver (Tammi Weaver) of Montezuma, William Joseph Weaver of Montezuma, John Mark Weaver (Stephanie Weaver) of Montezuma, and Naomi Joy Weaver of Montezuma; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; One brother, Eli Weaver (Irene Weaver); One sister, Barbara Yoder, and one brother in law, Daniel Zook.
He is preceded in death by his parents Mahlon and Sarah Weaver; Brothers: Clarence, Irvin, and Noah; Sisters: Mary, Emma, Katie, and Bertha.
