Mamie Marie Griffin Roberts of Palestine, Texas, lived to the age of 90 years.
Mamie was born in her Aunt Belle’s small four-room house, alongside a cotton field in the community of Flat Creek in Cass County, TX. She was the middle child of five, to parents Ruby “Hoss” and Lessie Griffin. The family lived in various locations in Texas as sharecroppers of cotton and corn.
Mamie went to Almira Elementary School from grades 1-6, then to Linden High School from grades 7-12, where she graduated. She took a business correspondence course after graduation. She and two other young ladies moved to Shreveport, sharing an apartment. That is where she met Charles David Roberts who was originally from Artesia, Mississippi. On October 22, 1957, they married and lived for a few years in Shreveport, LA. She worked for the Southern Bell telephone company as an Information Operator until about 1960. After working for a while, they decided she would stay home to raise the children.
In 1962, Mamie and Charles moved to Blanchard, living in a small trailer house. In 1966, they bought 4 acres just down the road and ultimately built a 3 bedroom house, a barn, and a greenhouse. Growing a garden and having a greenhouse there, she started a successful home gardening business. In 1981, she got jobs working for Arkla Gas Company and Century-Tel. Much later (2015), Mamie moved to Palestine, TX, to live near her daughter, Gina. Her favorite pastimes were growing indoor and outdoor plants, playing cards with girlfriends, shopping at garage sales and re-selling her finds, and watching football games.
Mamie loved to travel, going off on various jaunts with her girlfriends to Canada (Vancouver and Nova Scotia) and Mexico. She prided herself in having visited or travelled through perhaps 40 different states, getting lost once on Langley Air Force Base (Virginia) with her good friend, Mildred.
Mamie’s parents and four siblings preceded her in death. Mamie is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Her children are Gail Westmoreland of Colorado Springs, CO, (sons, Ryan and Galen; husband, David); Glen Roberts of Shreveport, LA, (daughter, Megan); and Gina Dees of Palestine, TX, (sons, Rickey, Steven, and Jacob; husband, Rick Dees, Sr.).
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath South Funeral Home, 2500 Southside Dr., Shreveport, LA, with Rev. Rick Dees officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial with a graveside service will follow at the New Colony Baptist Church Cemetery in Linden, TX. In lieu of flowers, Mamie requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
