In Loving Memory of Manuel Tanguma Jr.
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a remarkable soul, Manuel Tanguma Jr., who peacefully departed from this world on December 26, 2023, at UTMB Health Clear Lake Campus Hospital in
Webster, Texas. Born on March 11, 1944, in
Mission, Texas, to the late Andrea and Manuel Tanguma Sr., Manuel's journey was one of unwavering love, dedication, and service.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Manuel's life was a testament to the enduring power of family. For 57 years, he shared a profound bond with his beloved wife, Elvia Tanguma. Together, they built a legacy centered on love, resilience, and shared dreams. Manuel's devotion to family was unparalleled; his children, Manuel (Kim) Tanguma III, and Roxana (Scott) Hirst, and his six adoring grandchildren-Gabriela Marie, Grace Daniela, Scott Jr., Parker, August, and Sophia-were the heartbeat of his existence. Manuel also leaves behind his two siblings, Rogelio Tanguma, and Mary Chilton.
Manuel's commitment to his family extended beyond the ordinary; his grandchildren were the apple of his eye. His love knew no bounds as he reveled in their extracurricular activities, wholeheartedly supporting their endeavors. His involvement in their lives was marked by a genuine passion that left an indelible mark on each of their hearts.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Manuel served his country with honor and distinction. As a Military Police Sergeant during the Vietnam War, he stood unwavering on the front lines, displaying courage and dedication. Even after his Honorable Discharge, Manuel continued his service in the Texas Army National Guard for an additional 21 years, as well as a key member in the Catholic War Veterans Post in
Mission, Texas, where he achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first Hispanic Commander for a national veterans' organization.
On November 11, 1998, President Clinton extended a prestigious invitation to Manuel to deliver the Veteran's Day Speech at Arlington Cemetery-an acknowledgment of his outstanding service and dedication to his fellow veterans. His patriotism and leadership left an indelible mark, illustrating that the son of
Mission, Texas, could stand shoulder to shoulder with the nation's heroes.
Beyond his military service, Manuel's life was adorned with joyous moments. He cherished the art of dance, frequently sweeping his beloved wife off her feet. His passion for fishing and love for sports, encompassing a spectrum of games, reflected the vibrant and diverse interests that enriched his life.
As we gather to celebrate Manuel's life, let us remember the love that bound him to his family, the honor that defined his military service, and the joy that filled his heart. His memory will forever linger in the cherished moments we shared, the lessons he imparted, and the love that endures in our hearts.
While he now joins his two siblings, Juan Tanguma, and Gloria Burnias, in the realm beyond, his memory lives on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Manuel's family will receive friends and loved ones on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Flores Funeral Home in
Mission, Texas, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in
