Marc Smith Johnson, 75, of Clive, passed away at his home on, Friday, September 5, 2025. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, on October, 29, 1949, Marc was the son of Harold and Louise (Bergeson) Johnson. He married the love of his life, Shelly Bazzocco, on August 31,1990.
Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Iowa where he spent the majority of what he often described as an idyllic childhood in Cedar Falls. Here he made lifelong friends. Marc graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1968, where he was captain of the football team and class president. After graduation Marc, attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating in 1972. After a brief time in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Marc moved to Des Moines where he began his 40+ year career in banking, starting at Brenton Bank and finishing at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines from which he retired in 2016.
Marc was an avid reader favoring detective and mystery novels. He enjoyed fly fishing, spending many hours casting on streams for the elusive trout. He enjoyed playing golf and walking his beloved dogs.
Marc was smart and witty, which was often expressed through his dry sense of humor. He was a devoted and loving husband and steadfast friend. Marc mentored and inspired many lives, leaving lasting memories on the lives he touched. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who hold special memories and moments of him in their hearts.
Marc is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shelly, brothers Monte (JoAnn) Johnson and H. Michael (Karen Forrest) Johnson, mother- in-law, Karen Bazzocco, brothers-in-law Dominic "Nick" (Teresa) Bazzocco and Anthony "Tony" (Michelle) Bazzocco, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved and adored him.
An open house gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, October 3, 4-6 p.m. in the Martha and Mary Room at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3663 66th Street, Urbandale, Iowa.
To honor Marc's memory, consider spreading his love of reading by reading to a child. You may also support a cause close to his heart by making a donation to a local animal rescue.
