Robert KENERSON Obituary

KENERSON, Robert F. July 1, 1938 - September 6, 2025

Long-time Winchester resident, Bob Kenerson, passed away on September 6, after prolonged health issues.

Bob was a 1956 graduate of Wellesley High School, where he was an exchange student to Switzerland and a piano accompanist for the choral groups. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1960 and pursued a career in psychiatry, graduating from Boston University School of Medicine, class of 1965, which included time at London's University College Hospital and University of Utah affiliated hospitals. While completing his medical education, Bob also served in the Massachusetts National Guard, in which he was a Captain MC and commander of the 293rd Medical Detachment, stationed in Quincy, MA, and offered support to Fall River and Holyoke locations. He was honorably discharged in 1972.

Bob joined the psychiatric residency program at Harvard University, and continued to be associated with Harvard Medical School for 40 years, teaching in their residency program. He also joined the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Institute of New England, where he trained candidates for over 27 years. He was in private practice for 53 years and was on staff at Winchester Hospital. In 2007, Bob was recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as a Life Fellow, an award for life achievement and "a significant contribution to the field of psychiatry."

Bob dedicated much of his free time to support the schools he cared about, serving as a trustee of Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, NH, for 45 years, organizing development efforts and class reunions for the Park School in Brookline, MA, where he spent his middle school years, and heading up Dartmouth '60s class scholarship program for undergraduates.

Bob had a great sense of family and enjoyment for life. Married to Ruth Hauswirth of Gstaad, Switzerland in 1966, they raised their four kids in Winchester, spending time in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, enjoying the changing seasons of New England, hiking, skiing, and creating many memorable family times. He was an avid golfer and was known as "Doc" at the nineteenth hole bar at Winchester Country Club.

Bob was predeceased by his wife and grandson, Jake Jerman. He leaves his four children: Andrea Racek (Kevin) of Burlington, VT, Dan Kenerson (Lynn) of Sugar Hill, NH, Julie Kenerson (Eric Jerman) of Arlington, MA and Lisa Weber (Lawton) of Brandon, VT; as well as six grandchildren: Alex and Matisse Racek, Aquene, Dan and Jed Kenerson and Lukas Jerman.

Services will be held at the Winchester Unitarian Church, on September 13, at 10:00 am. A private graveside moment will be held in the Wildwood Cemetery, in Winchester. The family thanks Bob's many medical professionals and care givers at Lahey Medical Center, Waterstone at Wellesley Assisted Living, Pro and Friends, and Good Shepherd Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to the Winchester Music School, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Lane Funeral Home

I just heard of Bob's death in the DAM. During our first 2 years at Dartmouth, Bob was one of my closest friends. He was a warm. sensitive, lovely fellow. We have maintained contact over the years with an occasioinal phone call or two. My wife of 65 years, who died last year adored him. We were married in my junior year. One anecdote you might appreciate. I am Jewish. In our Freshman year, an old classmate at Jackson College arranged a double date for us. She said I should bring a member of the tribe. I thought she meant a Dartmouth Indian. Also, I was diagnosed with broken-heart syndrome after my wife died. Bob told me earlier that he had experienced it after the death of his wife. I was so proud of him when we attended his piano recital in Hanover.

I met Bob (and his dear Ruth) through my husband Marc who was his Godson. Bob had such a loving and impactful presence in my husband's entire life that I will be forever thankful to Bob and Ruth for loving him so well. I have seen so many pictures of Bob at different times and milestones in Marc's life, read so many cards and letters from him, and listened to such lovely stories from the mouth of every one of my in laws, that I often feel that I have known Bob for as long as Marc knew him himself, however I only personally met Bob in 2009 at my wedding, and I have only praising words to describe every interaction I had with him and Ruth. They were a real team, they were an endless source of love for their family, their community and each one of us who were blessed enough to cross their path. Bob and Ruth, never spared encouraging words at every significant time in our lives, they embraced my children and me as much as they did Marc. I am really sad the last few times I tried contacting Bob and did not get a reply I did not persist on finding out what was going on with his health... I am sad the he did not get to meet our younger daughter...I truly wish I had worked harder at staying in touch with him. Despite this, I can assure Andrea, Dan, Julie and Lisa that not one day goes by without us remembering your whole family when we sit at our table and put our food over the beautiful Lady Susan that you gave us as a wedding present. Much love.

I just learned of the passing of Dr. Kenerson. We served together on the Cardigan Mountain School Board of Trustees for 20 years. He was a thoughtful contributor to our meetings and influential in decisions relative to the campus medical center. He and I met often while in Boston, enjoying conversations about our families over lunch. He called even in his last quiet years to inquire about our sons, and his lovely comments were nourishment to my soul. Rest in Peace.

I saw Dr. Kennerson ten years ago when I was at a very low point in my life. I was only 22 and so scared. He brought me (as well as I'm sure countless others) out of it with his support and his guidance. I only wished I was able to express my gratitude to him when I had the chance. He's definitely one of the reasons I'm here today. My heart and love goes out to his loved ones and anyone who knew him.

Dr. Kenerson was a wonderful, kind, and caring man. I met him more than twenty years ago, and I´m so very grateful for the many conversations and discussions. A brilliant clinician, for sure, but an even better human being and gentleman. Sending good thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
