Marcella Barnes was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, she passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at the age of 58. Marcella, known to many as Ann, was born on July 14, 1966, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to William and Verlean Hodges.
Ann was a proud graduate of Howe High School and spent the majority of her life in Indianapolis, where she made a lasting impact through her career at the Indianapolis Public Library. She worked at the library for 39 years, serving patrons and working alongside her coworkers, all of whom cherished her kind spirit, dedication, and love for books. Ann’s passion for reading was evident, as she never met a book she didn’t enjoy. Her warm personality and helpfulness made her a friend to all who encountered her, whether they were fellow staff members or library visitors.
Ann was proceeded in death by her sister, Latonya M Hodges, whose loss she carried deeply. She is survived by her loving mother, Verlean Hodges, and her siblings, Korine (James) Bailey and John (Keesha) Keller. Ann was also a cherished aunt to her nieces and nephews: Ashley, Misha April (Leon), Bryanna, Amber, Da’ja, John Jr., and James, (Miciyah and Christopher). She was a proud great-aunt to Zy’Aire, Sy’a, Daylan who all held a special place in her heart.
Outside of work, Ann was an avid couponer and took great pride in finding the best deals. She also dedicated time to self-care, always ensuring she found moments for relaxation and rejuvenation. Ann had a deep love for movies, often escaping into the world of film as a way to unwind and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
Ann’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched during her time with us. Her kindness, laughter, and love for books will continue to inspire those who knew her.
A celebration of Ann’s life will be held at Flanner Buchanan 10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN on January 4, 2025, from 10am-2pm.
Rest in peace, aunt Ann. You will be missed more than words can express.
