Marcyan “Marcy” Johns Eggen, age 75, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 21, at 3:10 p.m., surrounded by the love of her family, after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Marcy was born on July 3, 1950, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Clarence and Cecelia (Blazejak) Johns. Following the untimely passing of her mother when Marcy was just 18 months old, she was lovingly raised by her father and her dear maternal aunt, Helen (Blazejak) Kucza, whom Marcy cherished as her “mom” throughout her life. Their devotion and guidance shaped the woman Marcy became - strong, independent, kind, and full of compassion.
She attended St. Peter & Paul Elementary and Middle School and was a proud graduate of Duluth Cathedral High School in 1968. Marcy went on to earn a degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from the University of Minnesota–Duluth in 1972, beginning her career as a speech therapist with both the Human Development Center and ISD 709. Later, with determination and grace, she pursued registered nursing at St. Luke’s School of Nursing, graduating at the top of her class and as part of the school’s final graduating class of 1986.Marcy dedicated nearly three decades of her career to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where she served with extraordinary skill and compassion as a Registered Nurse. She retired on July 12,2015, from the Cardiac Procedural and Interventional Unit as Assistant Head Nurse, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and care for countless patients and colleagues.
On July 14, 1973, Marcy married the love of her life, Dan Eggen, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Duluth. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and unconditional love.Marcy’s greatest joy was her family, especially her daughters and grandchildren, who brought endless pride and light into her life. She will be remembered for her boundless warmth, her sparkling eyes, her bright smile, her infectious laugh and her gift for making those around her feel valued and cared for.
Marcy is survived by her devoted husband, Dan; her beloved daughters, Erin (Billy) VonSee and Katie (Justin) Riddell, both of Lakeville; cherished grandchildren, Hailey, Lauren, Addison, and Liam VonSee, and Sydney and Elin Riddell; as well as her siblings, Ray Sink, Leonard Kucza, and Wallace Kucza. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory. She is preceded in death by her parents, Cecelia and Clarence Johns; her aunt and second mother, Helen Kucza; her brother, Edward Sink; and her sister, Janet McKenna.
Marcy will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her never ending positivity, her quiet strength, and the love she so generously gave to all. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
