KEOTA-Margaret Ann Bermel, age 83, of Keota, died Sunday, August 13, 2023, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, due to complications from a fall.
Margaret was born September 23, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa, to Harold and Carlotta (Pitzenberger) Hutchison, Sr. She graduated from Holy Family High School and received her RN at Mercy in Iowa City. On September 10, 1960, she married Donald Bermel in Mason City. Margaret worked as a school nurse and was the head nurse for Dr. Gantz at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for 25 years, retiring in 2002. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, the Altar and Rosary Society and TTT. In addition to being the best wife, mom and grandma, Margaret enjoyed Donnie and her family, following her sons and grandkids on the golf course and other activities, cheering on the Hawks, playing bridge, shopping and spending time with her dear friend, Joyce.
Survivors include her husband: Don of Keota; four sons: Jeff (Carol) Bermel of Keota, John (Tracy) Bermel of Cedar Falls, Jamie (Jacque) Bermel of Lawrence, Kansas and Jodi (Kathy) Bermel of Granger; 13 grandchildren: Cari (Dave) Harland, Kyle (Sydney) Bermel, Abby (Adam) Luehmann, Jacob (Shannon) Bermel, Hailey (Tanner) Strudthoff, Hannah Bermel, Ben (fiancé Cassidy) Bermel, Emily Bermel, Jack Bermel, Charlie Bermel, Maggie (Joe) Brett, Briley Bermel and Nick Bermel; nine great grandchildren and four sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Bill, Jim, Joe and Junie Hutchison; two sisters: Mary Helen Luecht and Barbara Jean Hutchison in infancy and great grandson: A.J. Luehmann.
Memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Robert Lathrop officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the church, where there will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.
