Margaret Ann (Proctor) Coonce, born in Louisville, NE, on April 13th, 1933 went home to be with the Lord on October 18th, 2025. Margaret was greatly devoted to and loved by her family and was greatly loved in return. Upon meeting Margaret, people immediately liked her due to her quiet confidence, intelligence, sincerity, and pleasant personality. She was a wonderful mother to her two children Gary Coonce (Bridget Coonce), and Susanne (Coonce) Hinds, and was a devoted grandmother to Sean Lee Coonce (Amy Harrington), Alexandra Lee (Coonce) Goggins (Andrew Goggins), and McKenzie Lee (Coonce) Shawnson (Shea Shawnson). It was a rich and much looked forward to experience spending time in Margaret's presence with her keen wit, great sense of humor, and often spellbinding and memorable story-telling. Margaret was interested in many subjects, loved learning, and was quite adventurous. In 1953, she married Floyd Ward Coonce. In 1960, with two kids in tow, she boldly drove, in a Volkswagon bug, the newly opened Alaskan Highway to join him in Fairbanks where he had been stationed in the Air Force - "it was the adventure of a lifetime". Margaret obtained her LVN credential and worked as a hospital nurse for many years. Going back to school in her mid-30's she earned an Associate degree from Foothill College, a BA from San Jose State, and later, a Master's degree from San Francisco State in health education. Margaret also obtained a teaching credential and taught at Foothill College and West Valley College in the field of health education. In addition, Margaret was a
American Red Cross volunteer and taught CPR classes for several years and worked as a Coast Guard volunteer. After retiring from a 27-year career at Foothill College in 1998, Margaret moved from San Jose to Aptos where she was more fully able to pursue her many interests. She obtained Master Gardener status from UC Santa Cruz, took up lawn bowling, sang in the Cabrillo choir, played Seascape with her "golf buddies," and traveled to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, Canada, Hawaii, and Europe. Margaret loved her Aptos home which she called "her jewel box" and will be greatly missed by her friends, family, and by all who knew her.
