Margaret L. Highfield, a cherished educator, devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother, passed away at 7:08 am on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, in St. Paul's Retirement Community. Born on July 3, 1942, in South Bend, Margaret's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and the love she shared with those around her.
Margaret's journey began as the daughter of the late Henry Sibly and Margaret (Kramer) Sibly-Wahman. She grew up in a warm household alongside her siblings, Patricia Marvel, William Sibly, and Richard (Nancy) Sibly, all of whom would cherish the memories of their sister's kind heart and radiant smile.
On October 29, 1966, Margaret's life was beautifully entwined with that of William Highfield as they exchanged vows at St. Jude Catholic Church in South Bend. Their union was blessed with two sons, Christopher (Rosa) Highfield and Michael (Meghan) Highfield, who would go on to give Margaret the joy of being a grandmother to Peter, Mary, Eustaquia, Aubrey, and Logan, and later a great-grandmother to Gerson, Jacob, Gabby, and Jonathan. Margaret will also be remembered fondly by her brother and sisters-in-law, James (Laurie) Highfield and Karen Singleton.
Margaret's passion for nurturing young minds led her to pursue an Associate's degree from IUSB, which paved the way for her fulfilling career as an Early Childhood Teacher. Her gentle guidance and wisdom touched the lives of countless children, leaving an indelible mark on the community she so dearly loved.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Margaret's life was rich with interests and service. She volunteered her time and energy at St. Margaret House, where she made a significant impact through her kindness and generosity. A lover of history and family heritage, Margaret found joy in genealogy, tracing the roots of her family tree with meticulous care and sharing the stories she uncovered.
Margaret and William's shared love for travel took them on numerous adventures across the United States. From the historical landmarks of Washington DC to the vibrant lights of Las Vegas, the serene beauty of Alaska, and the sunny shores of Florida where they lived for 20 years, their travels were filled with discovery and delight. Margaret's love for the arts was evident in her appreciation for musicals, and she fondly recalled her time in the Glee Club at St. Joseph High School.
As a lifelong parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church, Margaret's faith was a cornerstone of her life. It is fitting, then, that a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her honor at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in the Chapel at St. Paul's Retirement Community. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the Mass to share in the remembrance of Margaret's beautiful life.
Margaret L. Highfield's legacy is one of love, dedication, and the joy she found in the simple pleasures of life. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. As we bid farewell to Margaret, we celebrate the light she brought into this world and the countless ways she made it a better place for us all.
