Margaret "Peggy" McDonald Howells of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away March 20,
2024. Peggy was born in Hanover, Pennsylvania in 1935 and moved to Williamsburg, Virginia
in 1974. She is survived by:her three siblings, Herbert McDonald, Judy Study and Hugh
McDonald;her three children, Bruce Howells, Tammy Kane and Betsy Allardice; and her
three granddaughters, Samantha Kane Rikard, Emma and Grace Allardice.
Peggy was employed by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for 28 years. Beginning
within the hostess corp, Peggy moved to the department of Interpretive Education in
1980 and finished her career with Museum Professional Services in 2003. Peggy
considered that one of her biggest successes, while working with Colonial
Williamsburg, was her involvement with the Seminar for Historical Administration.
Peggy had a generous soul, giving freely of both her time and resources. She served on
the Williamsburg Planning Commission, chaired both the fund-raising campaign for
United Way and the School Partnership team for Rawls Byrd School. Peggy was an
avid knitter, who donated over 100 custom lap blankets to the Tidewater area VA
Hospitals. Fact or fiction, Peggy also enjoyed reading any and all written words. This love of
reading served Peggy well in her educational pursuits. As a returning adult student,
Peggy rode the roads, from Richmond and Norfolk, earning her AA in Liberal Arts from
Thomas Nelson Community College; her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from
Christopher Newport University; she earned her Master's of Humanities from Old
Dominion University. She continued her education by receiving a Graduate Certificate in
Womens' Studies from Old Dominion University. Peggy finished the course work for her
doctorate in Education and Human Resources Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth
University. Peggy's family would like to thank Wardell Frazier for his constant friendship and care.
A private family celebration will be held at a later date. If you would like to make a
donation in Peggy's honor make them to the James City County Police and Fire
Department.
