Margaret Larson Obituary

Published by Chiampa Funeral Home on Jun. 6, 2016.
Margaret Larson's life was rich in tradition, her faith, her Swedish heritage and above all her family. Her family and friends will cherish a lifetime of joyous memories in their hearts forever. Margaret died peacefully on Monday, June 6, 2016 with her family gathered by her side. She was 88. Margaret A. Agerholm was born on November 24, 1927 in Island Park, New York, daughter of the late Svend A. and Ragnhild (Hedlund) Agerholm, natives of Denmark and Sweden respectively. Her family lived on estates in Monroe, New York, Bayshore, New York and Ridgefield, Connecticut before moving to Worcester. Margaret was a graduate of the former Commerce High School in 1945. Margaret met the love of her life, Carl A. Larson, through family gatherings, and soon found they shared a mutual affection for Swedish folk dancing. They married on October 15, 1949 at the former First Lutheran Church in Worcester. At this time Margaret worked as an assistant underwriter at the Massachusetts Protective Agency. Over the next several years Margaret and Carl built their home in Shrewsbury, where they have lived since 1959. Always focused on learning, Margaret earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Worcester State College in 1966, her Master's Degree in Education in 1969 and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (C.A.G.S.). While in college Margaret was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education. Teaching was her passion, and she made a difference in the lives of many students. Margaret was a highly respected fourth grade teacher for over 31 years at Fannie E. Proctor School in Northborough, retiring in 1997. She was honored with the Anna M. Seaver Award for being an outstanding educator in 1978. Margaret was a member of the Northborough Teachers Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association and National Education Association. Upon retirement she established the Margaret A. Larson Award and scholarship to encourage former students in their continued education. This was maintained until 2014. She was also a volunteer enrichment teacher at Paton School in Shrewsbury after her retirement. Margaret was a dedicated member of many organizations. Along with her husband Carl she belonged to Vasa Order of America Nordic Lodge #611 for over forty years. Margaret was also an active member of the Boylston Grange #111, and she and Carl displayed fruits, vegetables and flowers at the Grange Fairs. Always interested in history, she belonged to the Shrewsbury Historical Society, and volunteered as the schoolteacher at the District # 5 Schoolhouse for school tours and other events. The Shrewsbury Historical Society presented Margaret with the Shrewsbury History Award for her work at the Schoolhouse. Faith was an important part of Margaret's life. Margaret and Carl were charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester and she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. They were members of the Swedish Folk Dance Club and featured in the book "Swedes of Greater Worcester." Margaret and Carl were avid gardeners and horticulturists and loved working in their many gardens. She was a skillful knitter, making many treasured items throughout the years. Margaret took joy in the activities and accomplishments of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her face always lit up with a smile when she spoke of them. They were a great source of pride. Margaret is predeceased by her brother Paul S. Agerholm. Above all else, Margaret loved her family. In addition to Carl, her husband of 66 years, she leaves their children, Kristine L. Gustafson and her husband, Paul of Shrewsbury, Erik K. Larson and his wife, Laurie of Southbridge, Dr. Karin L. Underkoffler and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Underkoffler of Shrewsbury; she was the much loved MorMor to Ingrid M. Gustafson and her husband, Edward Hebert, Kurt P. Gustafson and wife, Sara, Erika M. The Shrewsbury Public Library Board of Trustees and staff send deepest sympathies to Carl, Kristine, Paul, Erik and Karin , grandchildren and great-grandchildren, on the loss of your dear wife, mother and grandmother Margaret.
Margaret was a gracious and kind person, dedicated to learning, family and heritage. We know husband Carl was so proud of her many contributions to community, church and family.

The Trustees and staff have added a children's book to the library collection, entitled A Brighter Garden, with the poems of Emily Dickinson and illustrations by Tasha Tudor. We hope this book, which celebrates nature and gardens, family life and the simplest of joys, will be an appropriate memorial.

Dear Kris, Paul, and family, Ed and I were so sorry to learn of your Dear Mom's passing. How well and vividly I recall her- such a marvelous and loving matriarch, and so modestly proud of her children and their children. She was so warm and so filled with wisdom. You felt good just being in her presence. I loved having her volunteer at Paton Media Center after she retired. She was "one of a kind". Remember and treasure the many great memories you have. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

I have been so deeply saddened to read of Margaret's passing. She was my best friend and classmate at Worcester State College from 1962-1966. When I was President of the Student Christian Association from 1964-1965, Margaret's contributions made our small Protestant group a major contributor to campus life. She was always so welcoming, so kind, and so genuine. When we were faced with a tough exam, we would study together at her home. It was then that I had the opportunity to meet her husband Carl and her children. They were all so supportive of their mom's efforts.
When we graduated in 1966, she secured her teaching position in Northboro, and I went to Framingham. Unfortunately, we lost touch with each other. I went on to study at Northeastern University and later the University of Texas in Austin. When I returned to Massachusetts, to teach at North Adams State College, I had a student in my Reading and Language Arts class who was from Northboro. She wanted to do her student teaching with Mrs.Margaret Larson, her former teacher at the Fannie Proctor School. I volunteered to be her supervisor. It was a wonderful reunion visiting Margaret and my student four times during that semester.
I also remember traveling from my home in Clarksburg ( North Berkshire County) to Worcester for a medical appointment. Since childhood days, I would go with my mom to Shrewsbury Nursuries on Route 9 in Shrewsbury. It was there that I had met Eric- wow, did I feel old. Eric was only 6 or 7 years old when I first met him at his parents' home. I asked him if he would extend all my best wishes to his mom, and he said he would do so.
I have wonderful memories of my best college friend. I extend my deepest sympathy to her entire family. Living over 100 miles from Shrewsbury, I am remiss in not subscribing to the Worcester Telegram on-line. I wish I could have been there to honor the memory of my best college friend.

Carl,
I was thinking of you and Margaret just the other day. You were such faithful stewards of Boylston Grange. I loved listening to Margaret talk about your garden and her family. She was so proud of all of you and her face beamed as she spoke of all of you. May memories comfort you and bring that same smile to your face as Margaret had.
