St. Albans/Highgate – Margaret (Peggy, Mim, Mimi) Lucille Moreau, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the University of Vermont Medical Center with family at her side.
Born in St. Albans on March 7, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Phyllis (Tillotson) Fitzgerald. Margaret was 81 years old.
A 1962 graduate of Bellows Free Academy, Margaret cherished her time as a Majorette and would occasionally pull out her baton and suit up in uniform to ensure everyone that she still had what it took to perform. She worked at Kerbs Memorial Hospital followed by serving as a longtime office manager for Dr. Bernard Boucher. Upon the Doctor's retirement, Margaret worked in immigration services for over a decade and later could be found "tending the store" at Bayberry Cottage.
Margaret was a devoted lifetime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and an active participant in the Misfits Home Dem Group. She found joy in the company of others, telling stories, and for the fortunate few, writing a special poem in their honor. Mimi's open door and her front porch will be deeply missed by her family and the many friends she made throughout her life. She will be remembered the most for always putting the needs of family members and others ahead of her own.
She is survived by her sons: Scott Bernard Moreau, his former wife Cynthia Hodet Moreau, and her son David Hodet; Jeffrey Moreau and his wife Heather; and their daughter Katelynn Moreau Delaplaine and her husband Ian. She is also survived by her sisters, Janice Bushey and Linda Hobb, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her cherished husband of 43 years, Bernard Moreau, the love of her life. His loss and the nearly two decades that followed were undoubtedly the most difficult years of her life.
She was also predeceased by her sister Patty Holland and her brother James Fitzgerald; her sisters-in-law Esther Fitzgerald, Germaine Lapierre, Sylvia Patenaude, as well as Yvonne, Jeannette, Muriel and Pauline Moreau; and, her brothers-in-law Carlton Bushey, James Holland, Marcel Lapierre, Raymond Patenaude as well as Armand, Alcide, Leo, and Raymond Moreau.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 11 Church Street, St. Albans, VT 05478.
Honored to be serving the Moreau family is Rett Heald of the Heald Funeral Home, where messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com. Please feel free to share your favorite Mim stories.
