Margaret Jeannette Kilmon Self, of Coles Point, celebrated her 90th birthday on May 4, 2025, and sadly passed away just eight days later, on May 12, 2025. She was the widow of George Percy "Pete" Self. Throughout her life, she supported her husband, who worked as a waterman, and later dedicated her time as a caregiver for the elderly.
Margaret was born in the small, close-knit community of Tidwells in Westmoreland County, Va., and grew up in Coles Point, surrounded by both her immediate and extended family. Everyone spent a lot of time outdoors and on the water. As the youngest child in a large family, she was cherished by her loving siblings and older cousins. Rather than spoiling her, their affection nurtured her compassionate nature, making her someone who loved to care for babies, animals, and the elderly.
After graduating from Cople High School, Margaret married Pete, and they settled in Coles Point. She dedicated her time to raising her daughters and enjoying cherished moments spent with her family. A devout Christian, she was a faithful member of Coles Point United Methodist Church. Margaret was actively involved in her church, where she sang in the choir and taught children's Sunday school for many years.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Cynthia Self Hayden (James Albert) and Sharon Kay Bristow (Richard); her cherished grandchildren: Jason "Bucky" Hayden (Janis), Stephanie Hathaway (Chris), Cole Bristow, and Kayleigh Bristow; her precious great-grandchildren, Grace Hayden and Declan Hathaway; her brother-in-law, Daniel Self; her sister-in-law, Doretha Minor; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Preceding Margaret in death are her parents, George Washington Kilmon and Safronia King Kilmon; her husband, Pete; her beloved infant daughter, Mary Anne Self; and her siblings: Carroll Kilmon, Leonard Kilmon, Martha Boyce, Emmett Kilmon, and Clifton Kilmon.
A funeral service for Margaret will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Nomini Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Steve Taylor. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. After the service, Margaret will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Pete, in the Kilmon family plot at Carmel U.M.C. Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the interment at Nomini Baptist Church. The pallbearers for the service are Jason Hayden, Cole Bristow, Chris Hathaway, Jimmy Moss, Amanda Casebolt, and Triston Courtney.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Margaret's loving memory to Coles Point U.M.C., P.O. Box 114, Hague, VA 22469.
