Margaret Louise Shafer Slater, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died Monday evening, September 8, 2025, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born December 29, 1938, in Aledo, Illinois, she was the daughter of Martin Monroe and Evelyn Louise Foley Barron. On December 29, 1957, she married Lyle Shafer in Monmouth, Illinois and he preceded her in death on June 7, 1988. Then, on November 12, 2005, in Gerlaw, Illinois, she married Bob Slater.
Louise was a 1956 graduate of Monmouth High School; and was a production worker for Thatchers Plastics for 19 years retiring in 1996. She attended Mediapolis Presbyterian Church and enjoyed her grandchildren, working with flowers, and decorating her home for every holiday.
Louise is survived by her husband Bob Slater of Burlington, Iowa; her children, Craig (Ruth) Shafer, Brenda (David) Newcomb, and son-in-law Larry Marshall all of Mediapolis, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren, and several great- great grandchildren; four stepchildren, Carla (Lyle) Timmerman and Shelly (Tom) Keltner both of Wapello, Iowa, Rick (Terri) Slater of Grandview, Iowa and Greg (Tammy) Slater of Ft. Madison, Iowa; eight step grandchildren; sister, Ann Waterman of Stronghurst, Illinois; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Lyle, son Jeffery Lyle Shafer, daughter Teresa Marshall, stepdaughter Marcia, two brothers, and two sisters.
Friends may call on Thursday, September 11th, from noon until 5 pm. At Lunning Chapel, 2620 Mt. Pleasant Street, Burlington, Iowa.
The graveside funeral service for Margaret Louise Shafer Slater will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, September 12th,2025, at the Kossuth Cemetery, rural Mediapolis, Iowa, Pastor Wally Reynolds will be officiating.
