Margaret M. Sweeney, age 64, died peacefully in the comfort of her sister's home in Bridgewater on Jan. 6, 2024 surrounded by and cared for by her family. Maggie was the loving daughter of the late Paul and Ellen J. (Nihan) Sweeney and grew up in West Bridgewater. She was a graduate of West Bridgewater High School, Class of 1977 and attended Bridgewater State University and Massasoit Community College where she earned her associates degree.
From the time Maggie could walk she was on the back of horses. As a teen she held the title of South Shore and New England Hunt Seat Champion for a number of years. Her love of all things equestrian lead her on a 30 plus year career in the horse trade. She worked almost every aspect of the field including as a jockey having won a number of races at Suffix Downs Boston. She worked up and down the east coast. She loved breaking yearlings for the race track, teaching them to ride with saddles, and later assisting trainers. One of her career highlights was when she spent a winter on a Florida farm riding "Unbridled" who would go on to win the 1990 Kentucky Derby. Throughout her lifetime Maggie had some special horses she would like to recognize; Missy, Monty, Pinky, and King.
Maggie lived in Nebraska for many years before moving back east to live with her sister Jackie Kilroy who passed away unexpectantly Maggie stayed to help raise her nephews. Maggie was a kind and sweet person and would do anything for anybody. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Margaret was the loving sister of Katherine E. Meredith (Sweeney) and her husband Frank of Bridgewater, Timothy E. Sweeney and his wife Debra of New Bedford, the late Jacquline Kilroy (Sweeney) brother-in-law Brian Kilroy who treated her as a sister, the late Paul J. Sweeney Jr., and the late John P. Sweeney. Loving Aunt of Alexey and Ivan Kilroy, Patrick Morse and his fiancé Jennifer Moore of Weymouth, and Daniel and Kerry Morse of Bridgewater. Also survived by Joseph and Virginia Morse of Bridgewater and the late Mark Fountain.
All are cordially invited to a Mass of Christian burial at Ascension Church, 160 Concord Rd, Sudbury, MA on January 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon at the Maynard Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to St. Jude's Hospital by clicking here.
