Margit Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2025.

Margit (Hebblethwaite) Johnson peacefully passed away on July 14, 2025, at the age of 89 in Vancouver, Washington. She was born on April 14, 1936, to parents Carl O.G. Johnson and Dot (Cutler) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm in Eastern Washington where she loved the beauty of the vast wheat fields.

Margit was known for her tenacious spirit, interest in people, and unwavering love for her family. Her life was defined by raising her three children, whom she loved deeply. She never missed a sporting activity or life event; some of her favorite memories were watching her boys play football from the bleachers at Gaiser to the Portland State stadium. She dedicated many years as a Registered Nurse originally at the "old" St. Joe's, then Vancouver Memorial and finally at PeaceHealth. She treasured the "people part" of nursing.

Margit was deeply involved in her community, participating actively at First Presbyterian Church in Vancouver (as an elder, deacon, choir member, Stephen Minister, youth club volunteer, VBS helper, Sunday school teacher, Walk to Emmaus participant, Friends of the Carpenter receptionist, and unofficial interior gardener), PEO (chapter JH) and honoring her Swedish heritage at the Order of Runeburg. Her hobbies reflected her love for the arts, the Trailblazers and travel. Her first trip was in 1946-1948 when her family lived in her father's hometown on the west coast of Sweden. She repeated the experience in 1971, taking her children to live there for a year. She adored the multiple shorter trips back to visit family over the years as well as a summer in Europe traveling with a Eurail pass and staying in hostels. Cruising was also a favorite.

She is survived by her daughter Cindy (Steve) Horenstein, son Jim (Christina) Hebblethwaite, grandchildren Daniel (Brittney) Hebblethwaite, Justine Hebblethwaite, Mariah (Aaron Karr) Hebblethwaite, Rob Horenstein, and Jeff (Maren) Horenstein, along with eight great-grandchildren and three nephews. Margit was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bob Johnson, and her son Bob Hebblethwaite.

A service to honor her life will be held at 1:30 PM on August 8, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, located at 4300 Main Street, Vancouver, Washington. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to First Presbyterian Church or Eastern Washington University.
