It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maria Alcina Correia, who left us peacefully, surrounded by family on August 2, 2025, at the age of 91 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose love and warmth touched the lives of everyone she met.
Maria Alcina was born on August 19, 1933, in Meruge, Portugal. She lived a life full of love, joy, and dedication to her family. She emigrated from Portugal to the United States in 1979 to give her family a chance at a better life and worked tirelessly to create those opportunities. Maria Alcina worked at St. Francis Hospital for over 10 years in housekeeping. She was a strong, determined woman who found immense joy in cooking, gardening, crocheting, going on walks with her family, and coloring with her great-grandchildren.
Maria Alcina was a truly selfless person, who always put others before herself and did anything she could to make her family's life better. Whether that was repairing holes in her grandchildren's socks, planting flowers in the garden, or cleaning up around the house. It was her family that brought her the greatest joy. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Maria Alcina's legacy continues through her daughter Alice Queiroz and her husband Victor; her son Octavio Correia and his wife Alice; her daughter Ana Dos Santos and her husband Humberto, and her daughter Fernanda Viseu (in Portugal) and her late husband Joaõ. Additionally, she leaves behind her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Lucia Correia, Joaõ Carlos Viseu and his son Joaõ Tomás (in Portugal); Jason Correia and his wife Abbe and their children Maya, Bennett and Zion; Matthew Dos Santos and his daughter Briella; Ashley Dos Santos, Nicholas Queiroz and Amanda Queiroz. She is also survived by her brothers and many nieces and nephews who live in Portugal, Brazil and Australia. All of whom will continue to honor her legacy of love and kindness. She was a pillar of strength and a source of endless love and support for her family.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Kane Street, Hartford.
Maria Alcina will be transported to Portugal where she will be laid to rest in her final resting place, with her late husband – Raul Correia – and other family in Meruge, Portugal. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to LAR of Meruge, Our Lady of Fatima Church, or the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center.
We are especially grateful to the nurses and doctors at Hartford Hospital and all the staff from Hartford Healthcare who provided hospice care during her final days.
Maria Alcina will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com
