MARIA LUCY OLEKSIJEW passed away on November 16, 2025. She was born in the Philippines on September 13, 1938, to a prominent family of physicians. Maria is survived by her husband of sixty years Anatol, and her four children, Anatol Junior, Victor, Rose, and Walter.
Maria was the youngest of her two siblings, fondly known as the baby of the family. As a youngster, she enjoyed playing outside, running around barefoot and being rambunctious. Maria was the adventurer of her family, seeking knowledge and thrills beyond the Philippines. In her twenties, she immigrated to America to finish her education. While her family wanted her to follow their traditional path of becoming a physician, Maria, the rebel she was, remained fierce and focused on her passions and goals to become a nurse. Through dedication and perseverance, she earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago. Maria then went on to serve as a nurse for forty years and always remained committed and caring. Her passion for nursing led her to teaching, deepening her impact on not just her patients, but future generations of nurses. Her immense care, compassion and enjoyment for the career lasted until the day she retired. Following retirement, Maria enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Andrew, Lindsay, Marissa, and Michael. Maria was often found reading, writing letters, crocheting, and doing WordSearch puzzles.
Maria will be remembered for her infectious smile, which remained even in the face of adversity. She will be remembered for her positivity and generosity, especially towards her loved ones. She will be remembered for her forgiving, caring nature, shown through the many years of devotion she gave to her patients and husband.
A devout Catholic, Maria is in peace now with her parents, sister, and brother, all in the presence of Jesus Christ.
The Celebration of Life to honor Maria Oleksijew will be held at a future date yet to be determined. Details to follow.
