HORNELL: Marianna R. Townsend, "Nina," 89, passed away peacefully, Friday evening, March 21, 2025 at Updyke's Willow Ridge Home in Hornell after a lengthy illness. Nina was born March 12, 1936 in the Bronx to the late Vincent and Felicia Vicchio. On June 8,1957, she married Thomas W. Townsend, who predeceased her on November 6, 2020.
Nina earned her Master's Degree in Library Science from Long Island University, Palmer Graduate Library School. She was employed as a Research Librarian at the Dix Hills Public Library, and she finished her career as a school librarian at the Half Hollow Hills Central School District, Otsego Elementary School.
She is survived by a daughter, River (Kris) Brundage of Bath and a sister, Teresa (Robert) Pedraja of Cape Coral, FL. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Townsend (Natalie) and a brother, Nicholas Vicchio.
Nina loved to read, and she spent countless hours ensconced in books. She had a lovely voice, and she delighted her friends and family with her singing, as well as playing piano. She enjoyed watercolor painting, pottery, and attending the ballet and theater with her husband and her dear friends.
There will be no calling hours or service. A private graveside service in Nondaga Cemetery in Bath will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions in Marianna's name may be made to Care First, 3805 Meads Creek Rd. Painted Post, NY 14870.
Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral home in Canisteo.
