Marianne passed away on Wednesday, May 28 2025 at Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin.
Marianne was born on March 2, 1934, in Richardton, North Dakota, to Ben and LaMoine (Davis) Hunke. She was raised in Taylor and attended Taylor High School. Marianne went on to attend North Dakota State University, where she earned her Bachelor's degree. Following college, she began her career teaching Home Economics in Lidgerwood, North Dakota, and later served as a Home Agent for the Morton County Extension Office.
Marianne married James Schaaf on November 24, 1962 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. The couple was blessed with their two sons, Gregory and James.
Marianne was a faithful member of her church, singing in the choir and serving as a Eucharistic minister. She also served her community as a member of the Glen Ullin School Board. She loved going out to the family cabin, and nothing brought her more joy than watching her boys play sports and later cheering on her granddaughters.
She had a gift for creativity and patience, which she expressed through sewing and making beautiful quilts. Marianne also enjoyed playing bridge and pinnacle, and treasured family gatherings, especially time spent together at the farm.
In lieu of flowers, Marianne’s family suggests donations be made to the Ben Hunke Music Scholarship at the University of Mary in Bismarck. Jim and Marianne established this scholarship in honor of Marianne’s late father.
Marianne is survived by her sons, Greg Schaaf of Glen Ullin, and Jimmy (Jessica) Schaaf of Glen Ullin; granddaughters, Jamie, Isabella, Aeriel, and Olivia; her sister, Vivian Ficek; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Schaaf; her parents, Ben and LaMoine (Davis) Hunke; and her brothers, Robert, Howard, Maurice, and Carlton Hunke.
