Marie Ely Obituary
Marie Sandyck Ely, a beacon of warmth and compassion, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 104. Born on February 3, 1921, in Woonsocket, RI, she lived a life dedicated to nurturing others, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and unwavering love.
Marie's entire professional career was spent inspiring young minds as a dedicated 3rd-grade teacher. Her classroom was a place where curiosity was kindled and children learned to believe in themselves, each leaving her room with a heart similarly overflowing with the same enthusiasm for learning and life.
After retiring from teaching, Marie selflessly became a caregiver to her husband, sister, and daughter, devoting herself to their well-being-a testament to her strength and unwavering commitment to those she loved.
Marie played many roles, her most iconic was during World War II, when she worked in an airplane factory just like the legendary Rosie the Riveter. Her time at the airplane factory built more than just aircraft; it built a foundation of independence in herself and shaping the nation's future.
A devoted woman, Marie placed her family above all else, cherishing every moment spent with her beloved. Her friendships were lifelong treasures; those fortunate enough to call her a friend knew they had a companion who would stand by them steadfastly and lovingly.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Eva Sandyck, her beloved husband Richard Ely, her son Philip S. Barlow, her daughter Lesley B. Barlow, her sister Paulette Lawton, and her brother Paul Sandyck. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jonathan Wright, her special nieces Catherine Barlow and Pamela Sandyck, and her devoted caregiver and "adopted" daughter Rosemary Hoagey. She also leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews who will carry forward her spirit of generosity and grace.
In celebration of Marie's remarkable life, a private gathering will be held by the family, who will remember her boundless love and indomitable spirit.
Though she has left this world, her influence endures in the hearts she touched and the lives she brightened forevermore.
