MARIE SHURMANTINE Obituary

Marie Frances (Schultz) Shurmantine passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at the home of her daughter, Lori and Dave Vorbeck, of Raytown, Mo. She died quietly, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Marie was 94. A child of immigrant parents, Marie lived a dramatic and eventful life. She survived the Great Depression, a childhood spent in orphanages, the Ruskin tornado, the death of her beloved husband, the deaths of two dearly-loved sons, Kent and Drew, and the death of her grandson, Geoffrey. Through all this turmoil she never lost her faith in God or her fundamentally positive outlook on life; she never ceased caring for others or thinking incessantly of the needs of others. She remained strong, smart, opinionated, and independent to the end. Marie had happy memories of her friends and times at Redemptorist Grade School and High School, where she graduated in 1937. During World War II she worked as an Executive Secretary at a small war plant. Following the war she married Donald Holt Shurmantine of Lexington, Mo. They had four children, Kent, Drew, Brad, and Lori, before Don was killed in a car accident in 1957. To raise her four children, Marie went to work in the Computer Programming Dept. of the Bendix Corporation, where she remained for 21 years before retiring in 1983. The rest of her life she devoted to her children and grandchildren, her family and friends, and her parish, St. Catherine's. Marie is survived by her son, Drew's wife, Pam, and their two sons Bradley and Gifford; her son, Brad and wife Mary of Napa, Calif., and their daughters Kara and Alea; and her daughter, Lori and husband Dave and their children Collin, Brandon, Kevin, Erin, Megan, and Caitlin. She is also mourned by her six great- grandchildren, Emerson, Cooper, and Sawyer (children of Erin and Steve Bales); and Addy, Greyson, and Griffen (children of Brandon and Amy Vorbeck). Marie died before she could welcome and love her seventh great-grandchild, Mabrie Marie, daughter of Megan and Mike Moll. A visitation honoring Marie's memory will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wed., Aug. 27, at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church, Lee's Summit. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Our Lady of the Presentation. She will be buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery next to her husband, Don. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Organization for Rare Disorders www.rarediseases.org Arr.: McGilley Midtown Chapel, 20 W. Linwood, KCMO, (816) 753-6200. To the dear beloved family of Marie-- I just found out of Marie's passing due to my Christmas card was returned to me. I am greatly saddened by her passing. She was one of my patients in PT when I worked at John Knox several years ago. We often talked of both our families and she would write me sweet letters. She talked of my kids as if they were her own. I will miss our telephone conversations and her wisdom. What a sweet lady and blessing to all who were fortunate to have gotten to know her. My life has been blessed by her friendship-- what an inspiration she was. My sympathies go out to all the family. In Christ-- Jackie.

It is with overwhelming sadness that I just learned of the passing of Marie, my "other mother". Marie and my mom, Thelma O'Donnell Alley were good friends from third grade. I can't count the number of times that Marie told me the story of walking into the third grade class at Redemptorist Grade School as "the new kid" when my mom turned around and smiled at Marie thereby starting a 80+ years friendship. I also remember Marie and her 4 children coming to our house in May of 1957 to do laundry (12 loads) that had been collected from their tornado ravaged home in Ruskin Heights. I could go on and on with numerous fond memories of Marie, Don, Kent, Drew, Brad and Lori. I would talk on the phone with Marie and we exchanged letters especially after my mom's passing over three years ago. I also had the wonderful pleasure of visiting Marie at John Knox Village. Being out of state, I had not heard of Marie's passing until my arrival in Leawood today for a week's stay. I decided to check on Marie when I learned of her death. It's been said a dozen times but it bears being said again, "Marie was saintly, and a perfect example of how all of us should be." Wouldn't the world be a perfect place if that was the case?

A beautiful person, mother and grandmother. I had the good fortune of knowing Marie through her sons Kent and Drew when I attended Rockhurst College. She will be missed by all who knew her and is now at peace with her 2 sons and grandson Geoff. May Marie rest in peace with her departed love ones.

Marie was my grandma Florence's life long best friend. My grandma had so many wonderful times with Marie and I know they enjoyed sharing all of life's ups and downs together. They lived life to the fullest, even in their late 80's they flew together to visit other old friends. Marie always cared so much for everyone and holds a very special place in all of my family's hearts. Your family is in our prayers through this time of grief. She will be missed!

Dave, Lori, and Caitlin,
We were so sorry to hear of Marie's passing. She was such a ray of sunshine and we so looked forward to seeing her bright smiling face at JSU volleyball games. Kara absolutely adored Grandma. The world is a little less brighter now, but heaven has a new angel. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Aunt Marie was one of the kindest and most generous spirited women I have ever had the honor and pleasure to know. She was a fabulous story teller and was positive and happy to share. Even if the recollection had sadness, there was never one bit of bitterness! She loved my uncle so deeply and life long that it makes everyone long to have such a love in their life! Our branch of the family will miss you very much, Aunt Marie!!

Marie was my mentor and my hero. She was always the voice of encouragement and compliment for me and Ben. Her legacy is truly honored in her incredible family. I have been blessed to have had this incredibly strong and beautiful woman in my life . She is dancing with her Don, Kent and Drew and countless loved ones who welcomed her with open arms. I can see her smiling now. Rest with a peaceful mind, Marie....your job here was complete! I love you now and always. Lori Dowd

I've never met such an amazing woman. Aunt Marie was more like a grandma than an aunt. She left me with special memories and great stories to remember.
She so loved my children as she did everyone. I'm so honored that I was able to know such a special lady.
So sorry for your loss, I know it's surely hard to say good bye.
We're thinking of you all.
