Sparta: We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Marija Glavan, age 44, who left us far too soon. She faced her long and difficult battle with cancer with extraordinary courage, inspiring all who knew and loved her.
Born in
Hoboken, NJ to Anka Glavan and Stipe Dizdar, both of Croatian heritage, Marija carried her roots with pride throughout her life. She cherished Croatian music and cultural traditions, and she spoke the language with ease and affection. Marija endured profound loss at a young age, including the passing of her mother when she was only six. Though her father struggled with addiction and was unable to play a consistent role in her early life, Marija was embraced by a wider family circle that surrounded her with love and guidance. Her mother's siblings-the late Nediljko Glavan, the late Marija Baljak, and Zorka Bazdaric-devoted themselves to her upbringing, offering stability, care, and a deep sense of belonging.
Marija grew up in Little Ferry and was a bright, talented student, graduating from Paramus Catholic High School. She later made her home in
Kinnelon, NJ, and worked primarily in retail and financial services, where she was known for her professionalism, reliability, and warm spirit. Colleagues and clients often remarked on her diligence and the gentle, genuine way she cared for those around her.
Marija's deep sense of family and forgiveness led her to reconnect with her father later in life. She stood by him during his final years, offering comfort during his own battle with cancer, and she took pride in returning him to their homeland for burial.
Among her closest relationships was the one she shared with her cousin, Dunja "Dee" Buch. They bonded over sports, music, and, above all, a fierce devotion to family. Marija played an invaluable role in the lives of Dunja's sons, Bobby and Peter, serving as a second mother to them through Dunja's own courageous fight with cancer and her heartbreaking passing.
Marija was recently predeceased by her uncle, Petar Baljak, with whom she lived and whom she regarded as a father figure. A natural caregiver, she showed extraordinary devotion to him, offering unwavering support even during her own time of great need.
A woman of deep faith, Marija found purpose and connection within her church community, where she offered her time, compassion, and kindness with humility and joy. Her generosity of spirit touched countless lives.
Above all, she will be remembered as an empathetic and deeply compassionate soul-someone who lived with quiet strength and an open heart. Her gentle demeanor, quick wit, and remarkable resilience left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, church community, and all whose lives she brightened.
In lieu of flowers, the family lovingly asks that donations be made to any cancer research or support organization of your choosing.
Interment will be private.
