Marilyn Bemis Obituary

Marilyn Sue Bemis, 83, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis, surrounded by her loving family.

Sue, as she was affectionately known, was born on Sunday, August 2, 1942, in Charleston, Illinois, to the late William H. and Juanita (Martin) Mitchell. She was raised in Martinsville, Indiana, where she attended Martinsville High School and met the love of her life, Larry D. Bemis. The two were married on August 22, 1959, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 48 years until Larry's untimely passing on August 30, 2007.

Sue and Larry made their home in Martinsville, where they raised their family. Sue devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family, rarely missing a school function, sporting event, or extracurricular activity. Her unwavering presence and encouragement were gifts her family cherished deeply.

Sue worked for the MSD of Martinsville for more than 20 years as a Title One Aide at several district elementary schools, a role she truly loved and took great pride in. Five years after Larry's passing, Sue moved to Johnson County to be closer to her children, where she resided for the past 13 years.

Sue found joy in watercolor painting, reading, and tending to her yard. She was a fantastic cook, an avid Indiana University fan, and a devoted sports enthusiast. Her family often joked that she had likely watched and attended more ball games in her lifetime than anyone else they knew. Above all else, Sue adored her family and seized every opportunity to spend time with them.

She is survived by her children: Todd Bemis (Kim) of Bargersville, Billy Bemis (Mindy) of Greenwood, Holli Terrell of Greenwood, and Marci Newman (Fletcher) of Greenwood; her sisters, Lana Hines of Greenville, Ohio, and Cheryl Allen of Florida; eight grandchildren, Jordan Terrell (Grace), Quinton Terrell (Andrea), Beau Bemis (Sara), Brooks Bemis (Lauren), Ellie Bemis, Charlie Bemis, Evie Bemis, and Sadie Bemis; and nine cherished great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Indiana, where Sue will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Larry. Following the committal service, family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at The Garment Factory, 101 E. Wayne Street, Franklin, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Morgan County Public Library, 110 S. Jefferson Street, Martinsville, Indiana 46151, in Sue's memory.

Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center has been entrusted with Sue's arrangements. Condolences and memories may be shared with the Bemis family online at www.nealandsummers.com
