Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Feb. 2, 2026.
Marilyn Rae Phoenix, 73, passed away on January 30, 2026, after a courageous journey with Parkinson's disease. She was born on November 2, 1952, in
Bartlesville, Oklahoma, followed 20 minutes later by her twin sister, Carolyn, beginning a lifelong bond that remained close throughout her life.
Marilyn graduated in 1970 and later attended the University of Central Oklahoma, where she met her future husband through the Bible Union. They married in April of 1972 and welcomed two children, a son in 1974 and a daughter in 1976.
Marilyn devoted many years to being a stay-at-home mother, giving her full attention to the needs of her children. She was a constant presence in their lives, serving as a homeroom mom, never missing a class party or field trip, and always making time to show up. During their serious illnesses, she was a steady advocate and caregiver, offering patience, reassurance, and unwavering support. Those experiences helped shape the compassionate caregiver she would later become.
Following her divorce, Marilyn turned her compassion into service by becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and as a fill-in nurse wherever she was needed, with oncology holding a special place in her heart. When she was no longer able to work as a nurse, she continued serving others by volunteering at a hospital information desk.
Marilyn faced significant challenges with mental health during her life, which she met with courage, strength, and determination. She refused to let these struggles diminish her joy or quality of life and became a source of encouragement to others, often helping them find resources and hope through her own lived experience.
In 2019, Marilyn was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. She faced this chapter with the same resilience and humor that defined her life, continuing to find meaning, connection, purpose, and humor until the end.
Marilyn enjoyed arts and crafts, writing poetry, and coloring on her tablet. She was also a devoted animal lover and the very best dog grandma. There was almost always a dog in her lap, whether it was Juan Carlos, Donnie, or one of her friends' dogs, and Juan Carlos was especially devoted to her. Marilyn had a special fondness for butterflies, which she loved as symbols of transformation and hope. True to that belief, she also chose the name Phoenix as a symbol of rising from the ashes.
She was known for her quick wit, her unpredictable sense of humor, and her love of storytelling, especially stories about her children that nearly always ended in laughter.
Marilyn was a devoted member of the Purcell Church of Christ and deeply valued the friendships, encouragement, and fellowship she shared with her congregation.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Murlene Nickels, and her sister, Celia Gay Nickels.
She is survived by her sisters, Susan Greenwood and her twin, Carolyn Wallain; her children, Myrl Nick Bird and Michelle Faith Foote; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, including one expected in March.
Those who loved Marilyn look forward to seeing her again in the resurrection.
