Marion Lloyd Byrd, a distinguished figure in Union, South Carolina's community, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2023, in Austell, Georgia. Born on November 27, 1923, in Union, South Carolina, Marion lived in Union until moving to Chicago, Illinois in his twenties. He spent most of his life in the windy city until 1993 when he decided to return to his roots. Marion's profound impact on the lives of those around him will forever be remembered.
Marion served as a Private First Class in the United States Army in World War II. His selfless service and dedication to duty exemplified his commitment to protecting and serving his country. Marion's military service is a testament to his courage and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good.
After his time in the army, Marion attended Tennessee State University. He then worked for the Chicago Public School System for over 30 years as a science teacher then as a guidance counselor beside his fellow co-counselor and dear friend Carol Anne O'Donnell at Curie High School.
Marion was an active member of St. Joachim Church in Chicago, Illinois and St. Augustine Catholic Church in Union, South Carolina. Not only did he have a strong relationship with his faith, but with his church family as well.
Marion's illustrious career as the President of Wallace Thompson Hospital Board, and his involvement as a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Union are testaments to his unwavering dedication to his community. He established Habitat for Humanity in Union, South Carolina.
Outside of his professional life, Marion found joy and fulfillment in various hobbies and interests. He possessed an exceptional talent for capturing special moments behind the lens as he photographed numerous weddings and portraits throughout his life. Captivated by nature's beauty, Marion cultivated a green thumb and was renowned for his thriving gardens that displayed a vibrant tapestry of colors. Moreover, painting served as more than just a hobby for Marion; it was a true passion that allowed him to express himself artistically and capture the essence of life on canvas.
In addition to leaving behind a remarkable professional legacy, Marion leaves behind cherished memories with his beloved family and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Josephine Marie Matthews Byrd. Marion also carried with him the memories of his late step father Dave Mitchell and his mother Dora Byrd, who provided him with unwavering love and support throughout his journey. Marion's memory lives on through his devoted daughter, Sabrina Byrd, and his beloved granddaughter, Christal Renee Byrd-Broadway. They were the lights of his life and his love for them knew no bounds. Marion's legacy will forever be carried forward by these strong and resilient women, who have inherited not only his strength but also his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Marion Lloyd Byrd was an exceptional individual who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to bettering the lives of those around him. His passion for education, volunteering, talent for photography, green thumb, and artistic flair enriched the lives of many. His memory will forever be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 2, 2023 at St. Augustine Catholic Church conducted by Father James Touzeau. Burial will follow at Mitchell Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
