Marion Denise "Niecey" Curry, born Marion Denise Tidwell on September 21, 1953, in Marianna, Florida, passed away on October 3, 2025, in Tonganoxie, Kansas. She was 72 years old.
Denise's life was a testament to resilience, compassion, and individuality. Though she was forced to leave high school in 1969, her determination never wavered. She later earned her GED and went on to graduate from San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas. There, she pursued her calling and became a nurse-a profession that would define much of her adult life.
Her nursing career spanned several states, including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, and Alabama. Denise dedicated herself to caring for the elderly with unwavering commitment. Her devotion did not go unnoticed; in the late 1980s, the *Houston Chronicle* featured her for braving hurricane conditions just to reach her patients. Her courage extended beyond the hospital walls-she once rendered aid to a shooting victim during an armed robbery at a grocery store in Overland Park, Kansas.
Later in life, Denise co-owned and operated The Sign Guy in Pelham, Alabama, alongside a long-time friend. Through this venture, she continued giving back by donating services to community projects and charitable organizations.
Denise was the proud mother of four children: Denise Bolton (Donnie), Chenoa VanBeber (James), Robert Curry (Olga), and Zachary Curry. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Caleb VanBeber, Zachary Curry Jr., Jade Curry, Riley Curry, Brennan Curry, Kirsten, and Robert Curry III. She also leaves behind one great-granddaughter, Chloe Ann Bolton.
She is survived by her sister Kathy Murders and numerous nieces, nephews, and loved ones who cherished her vibrant presence. Denise was preceded in death by her mother, Annie Katherine Cheek; father, Marion Oswald Tidwell; sister, Deborah Christensen; former husband, Robert Curry Sr.; and grandson William Curry.
Beyond her professional accomplishments and family ties, Niecey lived life with flair and creativity. A gifted seamstress, she crafted custom clothing with care and style. She had a deep love for music and dancing-her spirit often expressed through rhythm and movement. An artist at heart, she enjoyed painting and drawing and found joy within the art scene wherever she lived.
Animals held a special place in Denise's heart. Her beloved fur babies were constant companions throughout her life. Her colorful personality made an impression wherever she went-she was known as a rebel before rebellion became fashionable.
To honor Marion Denise "Niecey" Curry's memory, play "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum-a song that captures her bold spirit-and consider donating in her name to the ASPCA or your local animal shelter.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
Denise's daughters plan on having a private scattering of her ashes at a later date.
