Marion W. Jones, age 88 of Monroe, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at Bridgeport Hospital, surrounded by her family, on September 23rd, 2025, after a long battle with cancer. Marion was born on August 28th, 1937, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the late Alexander and Mae Wargo. She lived on Wordin Ave in the "Hunk Town" or "Little Hungary" section of Bridgeport and was a proud Hungarian.
Marion attended St. Stevens parochial school in Bridgeport, CT, until the 8th grade. Her family then moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, to North Benson Road, across from Fairfield University. Her parents raised boxers, and their dog Duke served as the mascot for Fairfield University, attending all the football games. Marion graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School, class of 1955, before going to Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts, and later transferring to the University of Bridgeport, where she received her associate's degree in Fashion Merchandising.
Shortly after graduating, Marion married her first husband, John Figlar, and became a devoted stay-at-home mother, dedicating her time to volunteering at her daughter's elementary school. She taught first aid classes, ran the school's newspaper, and organized the spring fairs. Marion had a passion for the fashion industry, later managing Marie's Bridal Shoppe, which originated on Frank Street in Bridgeport and later moved to Black Rock Tpke in Fairfield. Throughout her time at the bridal shop, she helped create countless memorable experiences for brides and their families. She produced and emceed many fashion shows across Fairfield County and regularly traveled to New York City to select the bridal line for the next season.
With an eye for fashion and an exceptional sense of style, decorating came naturally to her; she was even voted "Best Dressed" in high school. Marion took great pride in her holiday decorations, always showcasing a stunning Christmas tree, and had a knack for dressing anyone to make them look like movie stars. Among her other passions were getting her hair and nails done; she never left the house without looking perfect. To know her was to love her-she was kind, funny, and quick-witted. She had a way of responding with perfect timing and was always available to lend an ear or offer advice, earning the respect and admiration of many.
Another favorite pastime was dancing; you could always find her on the dance floor, capturing the spotlight at any party! Marion started her second chapter with her husband Ken Jones in Monroe, CT. They married in July of 1991 and were together for 19 years until Ken's passing. They shared a love for travel, particularly enjoying trips to Las Vegas, where Marion always had a room at the Bellagio and filled her time attending shows.
Marion was passionate about movies, art, and theater, and she always stayed updated on the latest films and award winners. One of her cherished sayings was, "Your children are your dinner, and your grandchildren are dessert." Her "dinner" was Kathleen (Figlar) Aquila (Anthony Aquila), while her "dessert" included Alexandra (Aquila) Hilliker (John Hilliker) and Michael Aquila. The cherry on top was her great-grandson, Everett Hilliker, whom she was fortunate enough to visit in the hospital shortly after his birth. Four generations together in one room brought her immense joy.
After fighting a lengthy battle with kidney cancer, Marion received nearly weekly blood transfusions during the last two years of her life. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the IV tech team, nurses, and outpatient care team with hematology and infusion on the West Tower 7th floor at Bridgeport Hospital for their compassion and extraordinary care, making every visit feel like time spent with old friends. Special thanks also go to her primary care doctor Dr. Stephen Urciuoli of over 40 years and Dr. Robert Weinstein, her dedicated and compassionate urologist over the past decade; the world is indeed a better place because of people like them. In honor of Marion, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, supporting research on bladder and kidney cancer.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 29th, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, with services taking place on Tuesday, September 30th, at 11:00 am at Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield Center. For travel directions or to leave an online condolence, please visit www.LeskoFuneralHome.com.
