Marjorie Joyner, 97, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Lincolnshire Place in Muncie.
She was born January 14, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio, the only child of Henry and Lulu (Avery) Hake. During the depression, Marjorie's parents moved to the farm in Columbia, Ohio from the "big city". This resulted in her attendance at a rare one-room school house from first – 8th grades. She had heard her eighth grade lessons repeated each year, she played "Tarzan" in the woods with fellow pupils of all ages, and her favorite activity was riding the pigs on the farm. Her mother would tell you she was a bit of a spit fire.
Marjorie graduated as salutatorian from Edon High School (Edon, Ohio) at age17. One activity that she enjoyed in high school was taking the "Hit Parade's" lyrics in short hand. A scholarship and summer work in Colorado allowed her to pursue her B.A. at Miami University of Ohio. At Miami, she met the love of her life, Ralph Joyner. In 1950, they married and became a "Miami Merger". She also brought their hobby of square dancing from Colorado. Margie and Ralph danced for many years, until he became ill and passed away in 1995.
Marjorie soon learned that she did not like to teach, but preferred secretarial work. Ralph was called to the Korean War. He enlisted in the Navy. As a secretary, Marjorie could follow Ralph with the children as he was stationed in Albuquerque, Key West, and West Warwick in the special weapons division. Ralph left the Navy and Industry to become a professor of chemistry at Ball State University 1965. In this new environment Marjorie chose library science because she could remain "interested in everything." Both of her BSU Master's degrees (in Library Science and Continuing Education) suited her well.
Mrs. Joyner spent 16 years at Ball State as the Architecture Librarian.
Mrs. Joyner wished to become a certified genealogist, but too much money and travel were involved. She was a member of "Palatinates to America" and made much progress with her own family tree.
Marjorie was a member of Unitarian Universalist church. She was famous for her rhubarb pie, her help with the raffle quilt, and the "bazaar ladies" workshop for arts and crafts in her basement. She remained able to sing a few UU songs when many other abilities had faded. Marjorie enjoyed camping and traveling.
She is survived by three children; John Joyner, Paul (Betty) Joyner, and Sue (Robert) Guillaud; grandchildren, Jackie (Ryan) Roberts, Letitia (Bradley Gunter), Paul Henry (Special friend Terri), Daniel (Monica); great-grandchildren; Roman Loper, Katia Loper, Felix Gunter, Hugo Gunter, Emmett Guillaud and Madeline Guillaud, Delores Slagle (Ralph's sister), and many "Hake" cousins who were siblings for an only child.
Mrs. Joyner was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Joyner, his parents, and many "Hake" cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held TBA in the Spring at Unitarian Universalist Church, 4800 W. Bradford Drive, Muncie.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4800 W. Bradford Drive, Muncie, IN 47304.
