Marjorie “Marjie” Lee Duker was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri and attended St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary, St. Teresa’s Academy, Kansas City Junior College, and Rockhurst University. Marjie’s three children Stephen Duker, Kenneth (Michelle) Duker, and Christina (Christian) Cook were all by her side through her illness. She also leaves behind her sister Clara Bauer, her aunt Lois Bauer, nieces and nephews, cousins, and numerous friends and family members including her best friend of over sixty-five years Marianne Greer. But her joy over the years were her five grandchildren Cade Duker, Evan (Keyanna) Duker, Noah Duker, Sarah Cook, and Rachel Cook. She was known for her unusual Christmas stocking gifts and singing “You Are My Sunshine” and “Zippity Doo Dah” as morning greetings. She was preceded in death by her parents August and Kathleen Bauer, sister Dorothea Bauer Schweiger, and husband Theodore Duker III.

Marjie retired from Children’s Mercy Hospital as Director of Annual Giving and previously was Coordinator of Gift, Clubs, and Donor Research at Rockhurst College. She obtained her degree while working at night. She served as St. Teresa’s Academy Alumni President, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and received major donor research and fund raising awards.

Over the years, Marjie loved her time at MAHA conventions, Children’s Mercy Hospital Auxiliaries, and church bingo with the Cure of Ars ladies. Her happy place was any beach, but especially Anna Maria Island with her special family and friends there and searching for the perfect shell. The occasional margarita or mai tai and chips of any kind was the best happy hour whether it was in Honolulu, EPCOT, Paris, or a cruise with her family.

While she walks along the perfect beach waiting for the sun to rise, here on earth our world seems a little darker without our Marjie, our mom, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend in it.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in her honor to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgery or MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium.
