Christian Biography of Mark Alan Bergt Jr.
Mark Alan Bergt, the son of Mark and Amelia (Imbush) Bergt, was born on June 20, 1927 in Deshler, Nebraska. He passed away on October 28, 2024 at the St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center at Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 97 years, 4 months, 8 days.
Mark attended Kiowa school thru 8th grade and attended Deshler High School where he graduated in 1944. After high school graduation he leased a gravel pit from the county.
In 1945 Mark joined the Navy where he completed basic training in Great Lakes, IL. He was stationed in Vallejo, CA where he was classified as a 2nd Class Seaman. He took the ferry every day to Mare Island to handle ammunition and transferred it to Treasure Island where he drove the truck to pick up the sailors in San Francisco to be discharged on Mare Island. Mark was discharged from the Navy in 1946. After his discharge he returned to the gravel pit business and purchased it from the county.
Mark was united in marriage to Norgene Schwantz on December 19, 1948, at her parent's home. They were blessed with three children, Roberta, Robert and Rachelle. Mark & Norgene moved to Santa Monica, CA where he worked with Uncle Fred Imbush building houses. In 1949 Mark & Norgene returned to Deshler, NE and built many homes in the Deshler area including his own home in Davenport. He then pursued the gravel business with his brother Don. The business became Bergt Bros which was a sand, gravel and ready-mix business in Davenport and Deshler.
Mark belonged to the Fire Dept for 25 years and was also Fire Chief. Mark was President of the Achievement Board when the Davenport community building was built.
Mark had a passion to build and fly model airplanes. He built his first model airplane when he was 8 years old. He was president of the Hastings Skylarks from 1980-1984. Mark owned Bergt R.C. Raceway in Hastings. NE. He was President of the Aurora RC Flyers Club till age of 94.
Mark enjoyed traveling in his motor home for over 20 years, while fishing, boating and taking trips to Minnesota.
For his 80th birthday he joined his daughter (Roberta and son-in-law Jim) on a cruise to Alaska. A dream of a lifetime.
Marks other passion was growing beautiful roses. He has over 50 roses in his yard. His favorite rose was Dolly Parton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Norgene on October 14, 2009 and his brother Don.
Survivors include his children Roberta (Jim) Hall of West Burlington, Iowa; Rachelle (Scott) Hinze of Humboldt, Nebraska; and Robert (Shari) Bergt of Deshler, Nebraska; four grandchildren Kristine (Jerry) Hall, Jason (Maria) Hall, Melissa (Noah) Topil, and Nicholas (Ali) Hinze; five great grandchildren Abel Hall, Noah Jurgena, Parks Hinze and Vivian and Mark Topil.
