Mark A. Candido, 75, of Hamden died peacefully on November 22, 2022, in Connecticut Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Laurine Sortito Candido.
Mark was born in New Haven on January 18, 1947, a son of the late Alfred and Natalie Rescigno Candido.
A native of New Haven and a product of the City's public school system, Mark went on to study at the University of New Haven, Quinnipiac University and the University of Chicago School of Banking. Mark began what would become a 45-year career in banking as a teller with First Bank in New Haven. He rose through the ranks to become Senior Business Development Manager, Leasing Department Manager, Assistant Vice-President-Facilities Manager and Vice President of Commercial Lending.
With his combination of knowledge, experience and skills he set forth to address his long-time goal of establishing a true community bank. In 2006, Mark, together with his partner Dick Barredo, formed Quinnipiac Bank and Trust Company. As President and CEO, Mark led the Bank to $115 million in assets in just six years prior to selling to Bankwell in 2014. Since 2016, Mark has been on staff at Newtown Savings Bank, most recently as Vice-President of Commercial Lending.
Mark was a member and a past President of the Amity Club and served as a Trustee of the Amity Charitable Trust Fund. He was Chairman of the Community Investment Corporation and a director of the Hamden/North Haven YMCA and the Hamden Education Foundation. He was named Small Businessperson of the Year by Business New Haven and received the Good Scout Award from the Connecticut Yankee Council, Boy Scouts of America. He served as a trustee of the St. Raphael Foundation and Hamden Hall Country Day School, Vice-President of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Connecticut and a member of the Fun Raising Committee for Easter Seals Goodwill Industries. He also served as president and director of the Regional Chamber of Commerce and as a board member of the Town of Hamden and Community Development Committee. He received numerous awards throughout his career, among them was the 2014 Veritas Award from the New Haven Club of Providence College.
Mark always had a smile on his face, encouraging words to offer and a pleasant demeanor.
He was the proud father of Christopher and David Candido and his wife Jenelle. Loving brother to Remigia (Meegia) Wojcik and her husband Frank, David Candido and his husband Tony Rossley and Alfred Candido and proud "Poppie" of Vincent and Joseph Candido.
Visiting hours will be Monday November 28th from 3-7pm in the Iovanne Funeral Home, Inc. 11 Wooster Place, New Haven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 10am in St. Paul VI Parish at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 2819 Whitney Ave. Hamden. Please go directly to Church on Tuesday. I will always consider Mark as a dear friend for over 30 years and the person who hired me out of graduate school for my first banking job. Rick Iovanne and I started within one month of each other at Bank of New Haven. Mark introduced me to the Amity Club 17 years ago and we also served together on the New Haven Chamber Board. It was my pleasure and honor to know him, work with him and enjoy many lunches and dinners with him and of course his stag at The Owl Shop. I will certainly miss his beautiful smile, his great ties and the way he treated everyone around him. Mark would always end a conversation with the phrase "Go Easy". I still say that all the time in honor of Mark. My prayers go out to Laurie, Chris, David and the entire family.

I am very saddened by hearing of Marks passing. I´ve known him since the 1960s. He was a good friend of my brother Lou Landino. He was always so pleasant with a beautiful smile. Every time I would see him he would go out of his way to stop me and say hello. I pray you all have the strength from God to get you through this terrible loss. I will pray for you all. My Heartfelt Sympathy to Lauren, David, Christopher, Meegia, Dave, Alfred, & Tony during a most difficult time. My Deepest condolences in your precious loss.

Mark was always a respectful, considerate and very caring guy. He always had a smile on his face and made you feel like you were part of his family. I worked at the same bank with Mark at First New Haven National Bank. I met him in 1967, I felt like I knew him for years. When I bought my first condo he helped through the mortgage process and made sure everything went smoothly, he really put me at ease in buying my home.
I will never forget you, Mark, you were one of a kind with your sense of humor.
God Bless you in the loving arms of our dear Lord. You will be so sadly missed by all of us.
