Mark J. Candon died unexpectedly on November 28, 2023 near Pico Mountain, where he first skied in 1960. He was 71.
Mark grew up in Proctor, Vermont, the son of James and Ann (née Dynan) Candon and the youngest of seven siblings. He graduated from Proctor High School and was part of seven state championship teams. He played soccer at Brown University, graduating in 1974. He then worked as a freelance reporter at the Rutland Herald, a substitute teacher at Rutland High School, and a two-term state legislator in Montpelier. He was named Legislator of the Year in 1983.
Mark married Debbie Degnen in 1984. They moved to Boston, where he began a career in finance; three kids followed. Mark was a talented skier and golfer, a talentless hunter, and a lifelong member of Proctor-Pittsford Country Club. He took a great interest in local politics and was the Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives for Vermont in 1998. For the last 28 years, he worked as an investment executive at Moors & Cabot in Rutland.
He is survived by his wife Debbie; son Justin and his wife Nicole (née Doucette) of Darien, CT; daughter Molly of Philadelphia, PA; daughter Reilly and her husband Eoghan Quinn of County Mayo, Ireland; grandchildren Mark, Elizabeth, and John David; siblings Nance, James, Mary Rita, and Kevin; dog Echo; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Services will be held at Christ the King Church in Rutland on Thursday, December 7 at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross, PO Box 37839 Boone, IA 50037.

We were so very sorry to hear about Mark. Our deepest condolences to the Candon Family, my mother, Barbara Little, taught Mark at Proctor and later in life trusted him with her investments. I was honored to continue to invest with Mark after her passing and truly enjoyed our meetings, his outgoing nature, great sense of humor and easy laugh will be missed. Sincerely, Janipher amd Mark Kane
