Mark Chatt Obituary

Sedro-Woolley - Mark Warren Chatt passed away at home on May 29, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born to Orville and Patricia Chatt on March 12, 1955, in Eugene, Oregon. His family moved to Iowa in 1956 and then to the Skagit Valley in 1964. Mark attended elementary school in both Ames, Iowa, and Burlington, Washington, then middle and high school in Sedro-Woolley, graduating in 1973.

Mark went on to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Florida, Georgia, Alabama Mission and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, earning a BA in Education. He later earned his Masters in Education from Leslie College in Boston, Massachusetts and his Principal Certificate at Western Washington College. He co-started at least two antique shops, Corner House Antiques and Moonlighting Antiques, as well as worked with many other local antique dealers in the area. For many years, he also hosted estate sales, most recently known as the Orange Shirts Estate Sale Services. Mark taught school in the Sedro-Woolley School District for 33 years, the majority of which was spent teaching fourth grade at Clear Lake Elementary. Besides church service, teaching school, hunting for antiques, and doing estate sales for others, he enjoyed raising his children, spending time with family, and sharing his enthusiasm for heritage and history with others. In his younger years, Mark's interests included anything mechanical. He loved to take things apart and put them back together again. This led to exploring an interest in mechanical engineering and an architectural career. This is how he gained his love of building and creating things like homes and other structures. He could always find the beauty in the broken no matter if it were glass, furniture, people or houses. His stained-glass creations can be found far and wide, and there are at least eight houses in Sedro-Woolley, plus the Third Street Station, that are still thriving thanks to his love for old things. As a Bishop of the Sedro-Woolley Ward and Young Single Adults Ward in Anacortes, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he grew a renewed love and appreciation of people for who, what and where they were. He loved everyone.

Mark is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susie Chatt; daughter, Jennifer (Justin) Ford; son, Michael (Megan) Chatt; grandchildren, Madelyn, John, Cameron, Kincaid and Alayna; siblings, Beth (Tim) McGurran, Julie Erickson, Scott (Cheryl) Chatt, David (Steffen) Chatt; In-laws, Mike and Paula Clark, Ray and Janis Fox, Shirley and Steve Williams, Mary Fox; aunt, Adrian Horner, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jay Chatt, as well as numerous aunts and uncles.

Our family would like to thank Hospice and Eden Health Care employees and all the family members and friends for their loving assistance and support through Mark's illness. A Funeral Service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1122 McGarigle, Sedro-Woolley, Washington 98284, on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 11:00 O'clock. Our relationship with Mark goes back to his childhood. He attended my baptism in 1971 with his parents because they wanted to witness a baptism since they were investigating the church. As a older adult, he purchased our Grandfather Stave's Service Station and Car Dealership on 3rd Street. He turned it into a couple of productive businesses for Sedro Woolley. He was always a kind, friendly, caring person who would have time to talk whenever we met. Our condolences to the family, Mark will be missed greatly.

I was saddened to learn of Mark's passing. I knew Mark as a kind and creative teacher. He will be missed by many. May his memory be a blessing to Susie, the rest of his family.

Mark was a friend and co-teacher. We had many happy times together. I am one of the lucky people that got to enjoy his art as I have several of his stained glass pieces and he even let me make one with him as my guide. He made a huge impact on many of our lives that will guide us as we continue on our path.
