Mark S. Hanley, 69, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, after a battle with late-stage kidney cancer.
Born November 4, 1953, Mark was the younger of Rose & Raymond "Butter" Hanley's two children.
Mark was an irreverent and mercurial character, leaving an impression on every person he met. After graduating from Bellarmine University with a degree in philosophy, he held many jobs, from LPD officer to manager of the Butchertown Pub, to used car salesman, among many others.
Mark was always the life of the party, with a sharp wit and biting tongue, and for those that he loved he was nothing short of a profoundly heartfelt and loving person. Although he could not always show it later in life due to his personal struggles, he loved many and many had a deep love and admiration for him.
Mark is survived by his sister Mary Ryan and her children, his sons Aaron, and Lucas (Kristen), and his ex-wife and dear friend Rachel Hanley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Butter and Rose, and his nephew Bill.
His visitation will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023, 4pm-7pm at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, Louisville, KY 40207.

Yes, his wit and also his warmth. I am glad he was my brother-in-law for many years and that I had a chance to know him and spend some time over the years with this exuberant and irreverent man who loved my sister and his son, Luke. My heartfelt condolences to all of his family and friends.

As part of our family there's many moments Mark made you laugh because one of his finest qualities was his wit. Dinner was superb when he got into cooking, he could whip up some phenomenal food. He could also entertain you either with his wide assortment of musical selections or by picking up his guitar. His opinions when combined with humor were hysterical. Rock on Marko.

My first night working at the Butchertown Pub, back in May 1985. Marko handed me a Bud, made me take a break, and told me not to work so hard.

Back in the day he was always cracking me and Donna up. My favorite was when he would sing Mack the knife. You had to be there but it is a fond memory I will always have.
