Retired Navy Lieutenant Commander Mark Hoffhines, age 74, died Saturday, March 15 in Norman. A cherished husband and father, Mark was one of the Good Guys! His life was an adventure, and he lived it in service to his family and others.
Born August 11, 1950 in Topeka, Kansas to Max and Ann Hoffhines, Mark was the second of six children. While Max was in the Navy, the family moved to San Diego, then Pensacola, before settling in Oklahoma City in 1958. Mark attended Catholic school through the 8th grade and graduated from Putnam City High School in 1968. He attended Central State University, earning a bachelor's degree in accounting. While still in college, Mark began his military career. He Graduated from Marine Corps bootcamp before later transitioning to the United States Navy to follow in his father's footsteps of being a Navy Pilot. Mark's incredible work ethic and positive attitude led him to have a successful career as a naval aviator.
In 1987, Mark married his first wife, Jeannie Marie (Morin) Hoffhines. Together, they raised two children, Daniel James and Kelly Christine. Mark's military career took the family around the globe from Texas to the Philippines, to California, and finally, Tulsa. After an illustrious career in the Navy, Mark worked as a FedEx Pilot before retiring.
Mark married Casey Worthen in 2011. Together they enjoyed traveling, antiquing and entertaining friends. They moved to Norman in 2013 where he spent many hours in his extensive woodworking shop, inviting friends to come play darts. He served as the treasurer for several non-profits, a responsibility that took him back to school to obtain proficiency in Excel spreadsheets.
Mark found great purpose and fulfillment through his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). For nearly the past six years, Mark was an active member of the AA community. He shared his story, wisdom, and unwavering support to those navigating the journey of recovery. Through sponsorship and fellowship, Mark became a beacon of hope. He offered kindness, guidance, and encouragement to countless individuals. His legacy is one of strength, service, and love - a reflection of the principals that shaped his life. He will be deeply missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
