Mark James Hummel Sr., 60, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 6th, 2024, surrounded by his wife Susie and their three children.
Mark was born on October 29th, 1963, to James and Virginia Hummel in Papua New Guinea, where his parents served as missionaries. He attended St. Paul Bible College, where he met and married the love of his life, Susie. Together, they built a family and moved across several states, remaining steadfast in their love for each other, their family, and the Lord.
Mark's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to honoring God, loving people, and being a good steward of God's gifts. He was known for his disciplined study of God's word and his emphasis on God's love and sovereignty, both at home and in his teaching at the local church.
Mark's discipline extended to his career, where he worked at Honda for over 35 years, eventually leading him and his family to live overseas in Japan for over twelve years. They embraced Utsunomiya as a second home, cherishing its culture, people, food, and nature. Mark and Susie often referred to their last five years in Japan as an extended "honeymoon."
Described as hard-working, generous, and strong, Mark had a tenderness for those he loved. He cherished spending quality time with Susie and enjoyed throwing darts, was an avid hunter and playing board games with his family. He was a devoted Michigan Wolverines fan and an exceptional griller, sharing his culinary talents with the many guests he and Susie hosted in their home.
Mark joins his parents, James and Virginia, in heaven. He is survived by his loving wife, Susie; three children, Mark Jr, Aaron (Eva), and Abby (Brad); four grandchildren, Jethro, Henk, Freya, and Holly; and his brother Dale (Marcia). He also leaves behind cherished relatives and extended family, Including friends-turned-family, Rique & Lori Ortega, Dave & Becky Olsen, Andy and Terry Joseph, Nao & Mioko Imai, Keith & Junko O'Donnell, Dustin & Mami Daiko, Makoto & Yoko Mori.
A service honoring Mark will be held on Friday, August 9th, at 7 PM at Snyder Rodman Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Drive, Delaware, with viewing hours from 5 to 7 PM. The service will be live-streamed from our Facebook, the link can be found here.
His wife and children would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all who have supported Mark and his family during these challenging ten months of battling cancer. Special gratitude goes to Mioko for her support with transportation and translation, to Dr. LaPerna for her invaluable support, guidance, and orchestration of continued care, both in Japan and here in the States, to Dale for his care and presence during difficult times, and to the medical teams at Utsunomiya Hospital, Riverside in Columbus, University Hospitals in Cleveland, and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their compassionate care.
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. - Micah 6:8
