Sara Elizabeth Hummel (Dean), age 98, died at her home Saturday, August 16, 2025. She was born February 1, 1927, in Fairfield County, OH to the late Jennings and Grace Dean. Sara graduated from Canal Winchester High School in 1945. She graduated from Grant Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. On February 5, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Hummel. They were happily married for 73 years. The pair made their home in Canal Winchester on the family farm.
Sara was a farmer's wife and had a career as a nurse. She worked as a nursing supervisor at Grant Hospital, Home Health, Franklin County Visiting Nurse, and school nurse for the Groveport School District. She had many interests, flower arrangements, playing Bridge, collecting Tea Leaf china, and loved to entertain her many friends and family with tasty and wonderfully prepared dinners. She was an active member of the Grant Women's Service Board and received the Serendipity Honoree award.
She was a lifetime member at David Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was involved in many organizations of the church such as Come Double, The Pastor Call Committee, and the Organ Restoration Campaign.
Sara is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas; brother, Darl. She is survived by her children; Janice Evans, Mike (Robin) Hummel; grandchildren, Mark Evans, Megan Tucker (Chase); great-grandchildren, Roman, Cohen, and Rose; numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate her life will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at11:00am at David Evangelical Lutheran Church, 300 Groveport Pike 43110. The family will receive friends and family before the service from 10-11am at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Sara's name to David Evangelical Lutheran Church General Fund or Bella Care Hospice 110 Polaris Parkway, Suite 302 Westerville, OH 43082.
We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to family and friends that have provided support during this difficult time. Special thanks to Sara's care givers who provided angelic care, Jane, Bea, and Vicki, and to the health aids from Seniors Helping Seniors Lisa, Karla, and Sheila.
