Mark "Gus" Johnson
July 4, 1961 – October 20, 2025
Mark "Gus" Johnson, 64, of Sayre, formerly of Athens, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 4, 1961, in Waverly, New York, Mark was the son of the late Raymond Johnson and Joan (Kithcart) Mullaly.
A proud graduate of Athens Area High School, Class of 1979, Mark continued his education at Wilkes University and went on to earn his Master's degree from the University of Scranton. He built a long and dedicated career at Lockheed Martin, where he served as a Finance Manager and was respected by colleagues for his integrity, work ethic, and compassionate leadership.
Mark's passion for life was most evident outdoors. He was an avid runner and a proud member of the Valley Running Club, where he formed lasting friendships and inspired countless others with his steadfast determination. Over the years, he coached and supported Athen's High School cross-country and various youth sports programs, sharing his love for sports and the life lessons that came with it. Mark's commitment to running was highlighted by qualifying for and completing the Boston Marathon four times, a testament to his endurance, discipline, and spirit.
Beyond running, Mark found joy and peace in nature. He was a member of the Tioga Point Hunting Club, where he enjoyed time with friends appreciating the outdoors. At home, he took great pride in caring for his property and garden, often spending hours outside working with his hands and finding calm in the simple beauty of everyday life. He was a wildlife conservationist at heart and lived with deep respect for the natural world.
Mark faced his cancer journey with extraordinary courage, grace, and perseverance, defying the odds for years and inspiring everyone who walked beside him. He will be remembered for his gentle humor, his calm presence, and his unwavering devotion to family and friends. Mark's legacy lives on in the lessons he taught about resilience, patience, and finding joy in the journey, whether on the trail, in the woods, or simply in the company of those he loved.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife of 10 years, Jackie Johnson; his children, Brooks Johnson and fiancée Isabell Alexander, Zach (Jackie) Wisniewski, and Paige (Ethan) Calkins; grandchildren, Marlee and Margot Wisniewski. He is also survived by his siblings Bobbi (Bill) Furnas, Mike (Lina) Johnson, Toni (Paul) Abrahams, and Steve (Mary) Johnson; aunt Carole Soper; aunt Donna Robinson; uncle Donald Johnson; stepfather John Mullaly; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Chase K. Johnson.
A Time of Visitation will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lowery-Urban Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 225 South Main Street, Athens, PA, followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Rev.
