Mark Allen Long, 76, of Pine Lake, GA passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at his residence.
An open Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Pine Lake Chapel on 1445 West Pine Lake Drive, West Point, GA 31833. The family welcomes flowers, or for those who wish to honor Mark's memory in a special way, donations may be made to the Pine Lake Chapel Church.
Mark was born on October 20, 1948, in Kokomo, Indiana to the late Carl Lewis Long and Elizabeth Louise Long. He graduated from Jupiter High School in 1966, and the town, along with the people he grew up with there, always held a special place in his heart. A Navy veteran, Mark was known for his sharp wit, intelligence, and determination. The phrase, "I fish and know things," suited him perfectly, as he had a knack for mastering anything he set his mind to.
Mark had an incredible ability to learn and master nearly anything, making him a highly skilled and knowledgeable salesperson throughout his career. He excelled in selling everything from electronics and sports equipment to pets and pet supplies. Partnering with his father, he also owned a gun shop, Long's Arms, in Columbus, GA, where they specialized in rebuilding, bluing, and selling firearms.
In his later years, he was deeply passionate about preserving Pine Lake and its fish and wildlife. He served in various leadership roles, including President and Chairman of the Board, and contributed significantly to key initiatives such as dredging and construction projects. Mark played a crucial role in assembling a team to explore conservation strategies for the lake and served as the Lake Management Liaison. If anyone in the community needed a weather update, they turned to Mark.
In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Lewis Long. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Marita Long; his sister, Joni Long Cotton (Joseph); his children, Lara Nicol (Derek) and Lana Long; and his stepchildren, Shane Dolan (Kerri) and Wendy Humber (Brad). Mark was also a grandfather to several grandchildren. Mark was fortunate to find not just an awesome fishing companion but a true and cherished friend in Matt White.
His neighbors will miss him profoundly, as expressed by many:
"That smile will be missed, as will his vast knowledge and dedication to our lake community."
"His work ethic, knowledge, and passion for this community were above and beyond."
A devoted fisherman since childhood, Mark found solace and joy in fishing from his boat or off the dock, especially in the company of his beloved dogs-Joey, Jaz, Fez, and Luey.
As the sun sets on a life well-lived, we bid farewell to Mark Allen Long, whose journey was filled with love, laughter, and the peaceful waters he so deeply cherished.
