Biography: Dr. Mark Stephen O'Brien passed away on October 20, 2023. Mark, the eldest son of Mark Peter and Hannah Dempsey O'Brien was born in New Jersey.
He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School, South Orange, New Jersey. After attending Georgetown University, he spent the next three years in study for the Roman Catholic priesthood at Seton Hall University. It was at this point in his life that Mark decided to emulate his grandfather, Michael Dempsey, and pursue the study of medicine. He graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine, and after his internship, he served two years on active duty as a medical officer in the United States Navy.
He completed his residency in neurological surgery with Dr. Frank Mayfield and Dr. Robert McLaurin at the University of Cincinnati. It was Dr. McLaurin's influence while at Cincinnati Children's Hospital that directed his career toward the care of infants and children.
Following a two-year National Institute of Neurological Disease and Blindness special fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Mark accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Surgery (Neurosurgery) at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1971, he became director of the pediatric training of neurosurgical residents and assumed the position as Chief of Neurosurgery at Egleston Children's Hospital at Emory. In 1979, he was promoted to Professor of Neurosurgery and Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
His major neurosurgical interests were in the treatment of hydrocephalus and brain tumors in children. His bibliography lists a multitude of scientific papers and book chapters.
His professional memberships included the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons (Founding Member), the Pediatric Section of the AANS (Secretary), the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (Founding Member), and the Academy of Pediatric Neurosurgeons (Founding Member). He was a Director and Secretary of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He served on the editorial board of the following journals: Neurosurgery, Contemporary Neurosurgery, Journal of Child Neurology, Journal of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
Mark served on the Board of Trustees of Egleston Children's Hospital at Emory and The Elaine Clark Center for Exceptional Children. He was a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the National Foundation March of Dimes, the Professional Advisory Panel of the Spina Bifida Association of America, and the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children.
In 2005, he joined the Neurosurgery Department at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Arkansas. He practiced at Arkansas Children's Hospital and served as Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
After his retirement from practice in 2015, Mark continued to participate in conferences and on the resident interview committee at UAMS.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Marie; his children, of whom he considered his greatest achievement being their father, David O'Brien, Derek O'Brien, Marcia O'Brien (John Liebl), Blythe (Will) Hogan, Blake O'Brien, Lauren-Blair (Lambert) Marshall, and Connor O'Brien; his eight grandchildren; and his brother, Tom O'Brien and family.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Christ Episcopal Church in Little Rock, with a reception following the service.

My son was a patient of Dr. O'Brien in the mid 80s in Atlanta. He was an excellent surgeon and I always knew my son was in good hands. I have a few Dr. O stories that I still chuckle about. I don't know why I googled him today and found out about his death two years ago. He was highly respected!

It's April 12th 2025, I had this random thought of the life saving surgery that I in 1990, at the tender age of 10 was blessed to have had this wonderfully charming, kind, sincere, and Godly man, along with his staff perform a vp brain shunt and another spinal shunt in 1992. I am forever greatful for the skilled hands this man possessed...this magnificent gift that God gave our world through Dr. O' brien to save lives of countless children, who wouldn't be here today if not for these surgeries! I am deeply saddened by the late learning of " Mr. Mark" I so affectionately referred to him as some 30 plus years ago having passed away two years ago now. This man was a shinning example of true leadership and deeply faithful follower of Christ! I distinctly remember standing in a circle with him, along with his entire surgical team and my parents before surgery. His lead tech was a beautiful woman named Susan...I can't remember her last name, but I remember a feeling of true peace and tranquility that was present that morning at Egleston's children's hospital. I remember him saying that it wasn't by his abilities that made him a great surgeon, but God was in total control of his hands and his team! The world is a little smaller and sadder place without people like Dr. O' brien! You will forever be for me and my family's heart, a true hero and I am forever greatful for the gift of life that this man and his magnificent surgical team gave me! May his family know this. From a south Ga Valdosta boy....thank you and may my most sincere condolences are with his entire family.
Sincerely,
Jason Yarbrough

Very sad to hear of the passing of Dr. O´Brien. He operated on me numerous times in Atlanta for shunt revisions. He was always very professional and to the point. There was this one time after surgery he was asking me how was I felt and I looked at him and told him he did good he got me out before the Georgia Bulldogs played that day. I had never seen him laugh but that day I did and after he left the room the nurse came up to me and said she´d been working with him for 5 years and never had heard him laugh like that. With all that being said I truly looked up to you for guidance and strengthen when I may of been uneasy with the surgery. You always took my hands and said Grant I got you! I hope you enjoy life on the other side and wish you all the best!

Our daughter was born with Crouzon's Syndrome in 1973. We saw Mark O'Brien when she was 4 weeks old.

Mark performed multiple surgeries on our daughter in her first 10 years of life, enabling a happy and productive life for our daughter. She's now happily married and a registered nurse.

Mark became a good friend and we stayed in touch until a couple of years ago.

Hard to imagine a man with a more accomplished and blessed life. We will always remember his kindness and professionalism with our daughter and with us. He was an excellent man.

I am heartbroken as I feel that Dr. O'Brien was a part of my life.. my family.
I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus in 1978 and I know that I am alive and well because of him and the good Lord. Please know that he will never be forgotten by his patients. He was my hero.. now and angel. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and the many, many patients and staff that this great man touched their lives. Love, Dorothy (Dottie) McDaniel

To the O'Brien family: Dr. O'Brien was used by God to install a shunt at just the right time after I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus in 1973 at 17 months of age. Years have passed. I graduated Valedictorian in High School and went on to major in theology and become a pastor of a church where I have served since 1995. I am married and have 2 wonderful kids... a 19-year-old daughter adopted from China and an 11-year-old son adopted from Ethiopia. I am 50 now. So thankful to the Lord for the gifted hands that he ordained to operate and install my first shunt which worked so well that it needed very little updating or adjusting and lasted without problems at all until just this year when I had another shunt installed on the other side. Totally recovered from that surgery now and still doing great. I just wanted to post a thank you to y'all as a family for letting him serve in medicine all these years and help so many children, including me! He will be sorely missed by many!

Many blessings and tons of prayers to yall as you miss him in these coming days. Praying for comfort for all of you in Jesus Name!

We met Dr. O'Brien when our son was born with Spina Bifida in 1985. He guided us through a number of surgeries and, in fact, trained the neurosurgeon who is now caring for our son all these years later. He was AMAZING!!!

Dr. O´Brien was a great friend of children and continued to serve during workforce shortages even when he could have walked away from the operating room after an enormously productive career. And so proud of his children. That´s mostly what we talked about when I would see him in the hospital. Such a servant.
