Mark Shaffner Obituary

Dr. Mark Allen Shaffner, 68, of Estero, Florida, died at home on October 7, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Anderson, Indiana, in 1955 to Jack and Joyce Shaffner and graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1973. He excelled in band, academics, and athletics, including basketball, baseball, and football. Throughout his life, he regularly referenced his appreciation for the guidance and life lessons learned from many of his coaches through sports.

After high school, Mark majored in Biochemistry at Wabash College before receiving his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1981. Mark practiced his entire dental career in Marion, Indiana, and took great pride in his business, his team, and his relationships with patients over the years.

He was a member of the Wabash Valley Dental Society, the Indiana Dental Society, and the Swayzee Christian Church. Mark also served as a Board Member and President of the Meshingomesia Country Club--one of his favorite places for golfing and socializing with friends.

Mark loved spending summers with his family at Lake Tippecanoe and continued the tradition after moving to Estero, Florida, eight years ago. Mark will be remembered for his quick wit, love of books, golf, science, and time with friends and family.

Mark is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ann (Rybolt) Shaffner; his father and step-mother, Jack and Winnie Shaffner; his three sons, Jason Shaffner of Swayzee, Chris Shaffner (Jenny Cookson) of Denver, CO, and Brent Shaffner of Estero, FL. Mark also precedes three grandchildren, Mason Shaffner, Scarlett Cookson-Shaffner, and Sebastian Cookson-Shaffner; a brother, Mike Shaffner; and a sister-in-law, Nora Jane Lamb of Swayzee. In addition, Mark leaves behind many dear family, friends, and caretakers, including Brad and Linda Hiatt of Ft. Myers, FL, and niece, Brenda Lamb of Swayzee.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Shaffner, and his father- and mother-in-law, Morris and Jane Ann Rybolt.

The visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, October 16, 2023, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, Rybolt Chapel, 314 N. Washington St., Swayzee, IN.

Funeral services for Mark will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Swayzee Christian Church, 110 N. Washington St., Swayzee, IN. Pastor Nanci Rosinski will be officiating with burial following Thrailkill Cemetery, Swayzee.
