Mark Speers Obituary

Mark was born August 31, 1950 in Christopher, Illinois to Hubert and Mildred (Boyer) Speers. He was in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era. Mark was a member and deacon of Thompsonville First Baptist Church. He also was a deacon for Second Baptist Church in West Frankfort from 1977-2018 and the youth director for many years. Mark worked at the Marion VA Medical Center for 31 years. When he retired, Mark was the patient advocate. He loved his job and helping his fellow veterans.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step brother, Tom Wiley; mother and father-in-law, Howard and Virginia Hermes.
Mark is survived by his wife, Martha Speers whom he married July 31, 1976; daughter, Claire (Sam) Kampelman; grandson, Wilder Kampelman; sister, Nancy (Danny) Schnarr; step-mother, Harriet Speers; step-sisters, Trena Walton and Terri Richey; and step-brother, Tim Wiley.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. Saturday July 5, 2025 at Thompsonville First Baptist Church – Thompsonville, Illinois with Pastor Larry Miller and Brother Mike Cash officiating. Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery – West Frankfort, Illinois. Visitation will be held in the church from 11:00am-2:00p.m. prior to the service.
Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 1961 of Orient and Zeigler Post 177. Memorial donations may be made to the church.
