Lewis was born September 20, 1936, in the Pleasant Hill Community, Wilson District, of Atoka County, Oklahoma to William Elic Lee Green and Chessie Lee Stevens Green. His family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1937. There Lewis attended school, graduating Cum Laude from Central High School. He was a member of the Oklahoma Honor Society and the National Honor Society. After some college he joined the United States Army in 1955 and was stationed at several bases in the continental United States. His favorite Army duty was as a radioman in the 11th Airborne Corps Atomic Artillery in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On two occasions he was chosen as Soldier of the Month. He again attended college and worked for two years before joining the United States Navy in 1960. In the Navy he attained the rate of Chief Cryptologic Technician Maintenance and was stationed at several bases located on the United States Pacific coast, in Hawaii, and in Europe. He served aboard the USS Hornet (CVS-12) in 1960 and 1961 and on the USS Jamestown (AGTR3) off the coast of Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. During his last tour of duty in Hawaii he attended college at night earning a Bachelor's in General Studies (BGS) from Chaminade University of Honolulu. During his military service, Lewis received the following awards: Army Good Conduct Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (four awards), National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Rifle Expert Medal, and the Piston Expert Medal.

After retirement from the Navy in 1976 he worked in the Muskogee and Tahlequah, Oklahoma offices of the Employment Security Commission for a period of time before being appointed as Fraud Investigator for the Northeastern Oklahoma region. He attended night school at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree. After retirement, Lewis moved to Davis, Oklahoma in 2000. He married the love of his life, Linda Kay Porter, on June 15, 2005, in Princess Anne, Maryland. He moved to her home in Lone Grove, Oklahoma later that year. Lewis loved photography, listening to good music, gardening, traveling, doing genealogical research, reading historical and religious literature, visiting with family, and most of all, just being with his sweetheart, Linda. One of Lewis' favorite remembrances is of being baptized in the Jordan River. Lewis is a member of several veteran organizations, the Oklahoma Public Employees Association, and the National Rifle Association.

Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Joan Reaves, and granddaughters, Ashley Kay Pruitt and Alyssa Page Morse. He is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Clifford and his wife Julie of Placitas, New Mexico; daughters, Melissa Green Russell and her husband Kent of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Barri Tinkler and her husband Alan of Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Laney, Casey, Nathan, and Joshua; great grandchildren, Ryan and Johnny; and by several nieces and nephews in Oklahoma City. Additionally, he was honored to have Linda's daughter, Elizabeth Booth of Amarillo, Texas and Elizabeth's son, Keenan Hickenbottom, of Knoxville, Tennessee, as part of his family.

Lewis' family would like to thank all of the staff at the Ardmore Veterans Home, Cross Timbers Hospice, and Ideal Home Care for their exceptional care of Lewis over the last two years.

It was Lewis' request that memorial contributions be made to the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Fund: NAMB, 4200 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta, Georgia 30022-4176.
