Our beloved Mom, grandmother aunt and friend Marta Ramirez Minica was born January 24, 1937 to Severo and Luisa Ramirez in San Antonio Texas has entered rest on July 19, 2024 at the age of 87.
The youngest girl of three Marta grew up in downtown San Antonio where she walked to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church school which was a few blocks from their modest home. She enjoyed spending much time at the church even outside of school time where she developed her strong roots in her catholic faith. She was best buddies with her grandmother who taught her so many valuable lessons that Marta would share with those near and dear to her.
When the freeway was built her family had to move so they relocated to the south side off of Flores street on Baylor where she lived until she was married. Marta attended Providence High School the first year it opened and was part of the first graduating class that attended Providence all four years. The graduating class of 1955. Perfect attendance and straight A's earned her a full ride scholarship to Our Lady of the Lake College where she graduated in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Marta taught first grade in the Harlandale Independent School District until 1969 when she retired to raise her little girl. After a four year retirement she was summoned by her fellow educator who since had become a principal to come back and teach kindergarten. She diligently worked for a kindergarten certificate since this was the first year kindergarten was instituted as a mandatory grade. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching "the babies" until her retirement in 1993. For twenty more years she poured her heart and soul into being an excellent, caring, highly motivated, fantastic teacher. She devoted thirty years total to educating your minds and molding their future. All thirty years were spent at the same school Columbia Heights Elementary in the Harlandale Independent School District.
After retirement, Marta loved the babies and teaching so much she volunteered and assisted her daughter in her classroom for twenty four more years!
Marta was not just an excellent teacher, she was a fantastic mother, wife, grandmother and friend. She was always happier doing for others and never asked much for herself. She wanted to make things for others, she wanted to make others comfortable, she wanted to give others gifts, notes of thanks, a beautiful smile or a compliment. She had a brilliant mind and a patient, kind, calm disposition. She was quite the storyteller and would entertain anyone who gave her a few moments of their time.
There are many people who can attest to the wonderful ways of Marta. One being her husband of thirty seven years, Fred C. Minica. There was nothing she wouldn't do for him. He was the love of her life and she made the world revolve around him. They met in February of 1965 and were married in August of 1966..They welcomed their only daughter Melissa Ann in November of 1967. Her only grandson Elijah Charles was born in December of 2009. Fred passed away February of 2004.
Marta loved cooking, there are many that ate her food and enjoyed her fabulous cooking. She loved reading, she loved going for long rides, she loved shopping, apple fritters, pineapple empanadas, bananas, big red, and chicken tenders. The teacher in her was always making lists and crafting. She was amazing at making things and loved giving out her creations to those she cared about. Many of her artsy things sit in many people's homes to this day.
Marta viewed herself as quiet and humble and would not brag or boast very often. Yet everyone who met her fell in love with her personality. Of her many accomplishments she assisted in implementing the bilingual program in Texas before it was an actual program. She taught a mock lesson in Austin for the Texas legislature at the state capital which was televised. She touched so many lives.
Marta is preceded in death by her husband Fred Charles Minica, her sisters Mary Lou Dunkley and Bertha Riden, and her half brother Domingo Ramirez. She is survived by her daughter Melissa Ann Minica and her grandson Elijah Charles Minica along with many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.
